5 Reasons why you should let your child plan their party

I am the organized type, the no I don’t need your help, but thanks for offering type. You know the person that always has it together. The planner, the list taker, the crafty one that doesn’t think anyone else can see their vision like I can type. Well, I was approaching my daughters third birthday and I had mentally planned out her celebration. I consider myself to be quite the party planner, and I had been advised to take some party inspiration from somewhere like Love Of Parties this time around, but I just wanted to give my daughter a great, fun day

On Sunday we would go to Build-a-Bear per her request at Christmas time. We would have a grand time then invite the family to join us for lunch. I don’t believe in big parties for all ages so we only do it big for the milestones. Well my three year old had other plans.

She got this adorable custom shirt, matching tutu and head dress by Make My Bling for Christmas.

She wanted her celebration to take place on Sunday Saturday, she wanted to invite the family out for lunch have the family come to our home to celebrate. She wanted to eat BBQ pizza and cupcakes cake. Oh, she also wanted to eat on Doc McStuffins plates and make a wish. First off she is turning 3 but she is planning like she is turning 23. Who is this bossy little girl with her mind all made up. I love her!

When it was all said and done it was a lot of fun. We did it her way and she gave me a big hug at the end of the night, told me I was the best Mom ever and that her birthday was awesome. That’s the point right? Yup!

Top 5 reason why you should let your children plan their own party

1. You’ll love the thought they put into the planning even if it appears random.

2. It’s their birthday, why not involve them in the process.

3. It’s a fun way to get to know your children and what they like.

4. Their ideas are usually on a smaller scale than ours.

5. They will swear it’s the best party EVER, but give you all the credit.

She gave me the theme but the decor was all Mi. Pinterest didn’t let me down, I did all the decor in the span of 24hrs, I re-purposed several items I had at home. I will note those things in the pictures.

This is how Nori’s 3rd birthday turned out…

I was so proud of my shy girl at Build A Bear, she picked out the bear she wanted. She mumbled to the lady assisting her as she asked her how she wanted to custom make her bear. With a little encouragement from her brother she used the foot pedals to fluff her bear and later give it an air bath.

She picked out panties, a shirt, tutu and socks for Laughter bear. She named her Laughter because she giggles every time you press her paw. Cute right. lol

She was on cloud nine after making Laugher. She happily jumped in this big chair in the shoe store and watched cartoons while we browsed the aisles. Her shirt says Princess Nori, it’s also a custom tee from Make My Bling.

Now it’s party time!

I emailed this invite to the family a few weeks ago. I found the image on the web and added the text via PowerPoint.

This was a small family only event so I didn’t go all out with the decor. This was probably the hardest part for me, I wanted to go all out. To keep myself in check I didn’t start working on the party until the afternoon of the day before. This would keep me from doing the most. The wooden letters sit on Nori’s shelf in her bedroom. I brought them down and added little band aids to them to go with the theme. I re-purposed the milk bottles from my sons Minecraft party. I printed out some water labels I found on the web and put them on the mini bottles. Nori already owned this Doc McStuffins car so I just added it as table decor.

Nori wanted a strawberry cake with white frosting and sprinkles. I used an old school bundt pan, I already had the cake board because I use it to make diaper cakes. lol I used my Cricut to cut out the letters and glued them to the board.

This was the fun table for Nori and her cousins. It included name badges for everyone, candy prescription bottles (party favors), a checkup check list, a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope (they were part of my Halloween costume) Doc McStuffin theme wrist bands, and a patient information list. Nori’s Doc doll was just decoration. (If you don’t have time to make the party favors, you can check out Promotional Party Favors which are easy to order and can be personalised to keep with the theme of the party!)

Name Badges

I used jars of Lego pieces that I use for shoes as toy parts. I re-purposed these jars from my Baby shower for Nori back in 2011. I wrapped a ribbon around them and added one Doc embellishment to each one. I already owned these embellishments because I use them for shoes as well. The bottom pics are a close up on the candy prescription jars I made as party favors.

  5. Janeane Davis

this post is spot on. It is often the case that children want something thematically different for their parties from what they like to play each day. It is great to get them involved with things that are important to them.

    • MimiCuteLips

Thanks Janeane, letting her plan her party was an eye opener for me too. I’m certainly going to continue the trend for years to come.

Thanks Vashti, it was so cute to hear her ideas. To know that at 2 years old she had all of these thoughts about her birthday. 3 is going to be a year of adventure for sure.

  8. Christine @MomsNCharge

Awww this was absolutely adorable Mimi! I love the simplicity of it but it was well planned out, with so many cute little touches. It’s funny how we’re the ones to go all out when our kids will choose something way more toned down (generally lol).

    • MimiCuteLips

Yes, as parents we think they want the moon and the stars and most of the time they want a lot less. I’m learning the less is more approach.
