So what shut up! Skinny girls exercise

One of my goals for 2015 was to get back in shape. Whenever I mention exercise or working out I get dismissive expressions followed by rude commentary along the lines of “I wish I had your problem”, “Whatever!”, “What are you exercising for?” SO I DON’T DIE YOUR RUDENESS! Just because your struggle isn’t my struggle doesn’t mean it isn’t a struggle.

I’ve been skinny all my life and for some folks they mask their jealousy by teasing me. I’ve have people say “I like having a grown woman’s body.” Well damn it so do I, I was born a female and have been a woman all my life. I’ve carried and birthed two kids and then breastfeed them for 14 months each. If that isn’t a woman’s body I don’t know what is.

In 2013 I started participating in what we called #xtreme13 this was a challenge to step outside of our box. For me it was about breaking into unconventional exercise. I did trapeze, scuba diving, fun runs here, here, and here and biking. In 2014 I kept that theme going I continued with the fun runs (3 miles) and started running during my lunch hour. I would run 3 miles around downtown D.C. I started with my co-worker and he would encourage me every step of the way. Random strangers I ran past in the city would encourage me, cat call and talk junk. It was hilarious and it helped me to keep going. I got to a point where I was running on my own, my personal best was 3 miles in 30 minutes.

Dreams Came True in 2014

Fall came and well I started eating more, it got too cold to run outside and I stopped workout. Although I was putting in work at the breakfast, lunch and dinner tables. In comes 2015 and I decide I have to get back on track. I allowed my Babe to talk me into doing Shaun T’s Insanity work out. I’ve been sharing my progress on FB and Instagram. If you aren’t following me you totally should.

I’m on Day 8 (the first time I tried I quit at day 6 two years ago) and I’m still going. It’s a 60 day work out and I plan to finish. Yall think I’m skinny now just wait until I finish I will have muscles too. I have two busy kids and an athletic man I need to keep up with.

GOALS: 1. Maintain my weight 2. A healthy heart 3. A flat stomach 4. Make it to day 60 of Insanity 5. To wear crop tops all summer.

Since working out I’ve noticed I am starving after my work out, my snack of choice is Granny Smith Apples & Peanut-butter. Then I have dinner and sometimes dessert. The amazing sleep I get every single night is AMAZING!

MiMi! The struggle is so real, regardless of size right?! I feel as if I fall completely off during the winter 🙁 Here’s to your health and winning at your goal…and for me I am going to cut the crazy eating and do more yoga! xo

    • MimiCuteLips

Cheers to you Cassandra, you can totally do it. I always fall all the way off in the winter, I need to figure out a way to keep going.

  2. josselyne

I feel you. I have carried 2 girls (last one was 11 months ago) and breastfed. I am a size 6-8 on bottom and 2-4 on top.. Yep! BUT.. i have issues. I cant run for my life, I dont sleep well and wake up like I aint slept 7 hours. I am exhausted. All that to say, that I struggle to. I have to find the time to get back ..sorry there is no BACK..LOl. I have to get to running, power walking or something.. Is it okay to exercise after the kids go to bed? Everyone always exercises in the morn or in the afternoon.. I only have the evening. Let me know!

    • MimiCuteLips

I never thought I would be a runner either. I use the couch to 5k app to help me into things. They do a run walk type of deal and that was a big help. You can totally exercise after the kids go to bed, that is when I get most of my things done. lol I exercise in the evenings.

  3. MJ

You are so brave to do insanity! I am going to try T25 after I have the baby. I want to look good and feel good for the Hoidays 2015 and if all goes well finally run my first Half.
People who think skinny people don’t need to workout are clearly foolish! Ignore the haters.

    • MimiCuteLips

MJ My bravery is constantly being determined. lol Doing it with my Babe forces me to be accountable. I want to try T25 too, but first things first.

  4. Kimberly

Fitness and wellness should be a daily habit for all of us regardless of our sizes. Glad to see you getting back into the groove of things especially with your husbands support.

  5. Stephanie

Good for you! Totally understand what you are saying. People always gave me the side eye when I said I needed to get in shape. Now they are asking me for advice! Right now I am getting ready to start the Do You Yoga? 30 Day Yoga Challenge.

  6. Whitney 'Nic' James

Go ‘head, Mimi! That’s awesome! Hubby and I have been doing more working out lately I’ve been taking a lot of classes like pole dancing and yoga to stay active. I thought about trying Insanity, but punked out. LOL! I commend you…keep it up!

I like having someone to hold me accountable during our workout. I saw your post on the pole dancing class that looks like a lot of fun. I know it isn’t easy to do though. I’m only 10 days in so commend me at day 60. hahahaha

  7. CouponGal (Andi)

my fitness of choice is to just start exercising this year

    • MimiCuteLips

That’s great Andi, you have to start somewhere. Once you get going you will discover what you really like. I’m still discovering what I really like.

  8. Suheiry

People are way more comfortable mocking skinny people to their face, than overweight people. Comments like “Real women have curves” are rude and demeaning. I’m chubby now, but I was so skinny growing up. As a Latina, this was not the norm, and I’d get made fun of all the time. You’re doing great—ignoring the haters and getting your fitness on. Good luck! Also, I love your fitness goals and may have to steal them. 😉

  9. Mandi

Can I just tell you how much I love this post and now you? I am a naturally skinny girl, too, and I get so sick of people telling me things like “you should eat a burger” or “It’s easy for you. You’re naturally thin.” Guess what? I work out harder than 90% of people I know. I watch what I eat. I drink mostly water (I mean, a girl needs coffee and wine occasionally). The haters are jealous.

“I was born a female and have been a woman all my life. I’ve carried and birthed two kids and then breastfeed them for 14 months each. If that isn’t a woman’s body I don’t know what is.” YES! YES! YES!

I can see you in the crop tops this summer! You’ve got this.

    • MimiCuteLips

Mandi I was all in my feelings girl. I hate when people try to make you feel small. (no pun intended) Skinny or not we have to workout just the same.

I can’t wait to post my crop tops. hahaha

  10. Zarinah Summers

Awesome Mimi! Your story is similar to mine. After the Army Ten Miler I feel off. I have now started my Slow Carb Diet this week & next week it will be my Jillian Michael’s video until I can run outside. I plan to become more adventurous this year and take advantage of the Groupons & Living Social deals. My hubby is a great motivator and it truly helps me.
Good luck & maybe we can plan to run the WW bridge this summer or closer to fall! Lol

    • MimiCuteLips

Kudos for getting back in the thick of things. Its so helpful to have a partner that is athletic, that motivation is needed. We totally need to get back to running the WW bridge again. I’m a much better runner now. hahaha

      Its a date this Spring.

  11. Camesha

Get it, girl! I am with you. I get the same comments about working out.

I love Pilates. That’s probably my favorite workout. I have a couple of Shaun T. workouts around here that I’ll be getting too. I’ve been letting Jillian Michaels kick my butt lately!

    • MimiCuteLips

I have a Jillian Michaels too, I need to dust it off and actually try the work out. I’ve never tried pilates but that is on my list too. Get it girl!

  12. nadeen

GOOD FOR YOU!!! I tell me skinny friends all the time that skinny does not equal healthy!! I slacked off after the summer and fall when I love to cycle and walk and hike but I started back strong January 1 and Im back to spinning and will try bar classes. Good luck with insanity! I made it to day 14 when I did it lol

    • MimiCuteLips

I’m so afraid of spin class, but its so popular. During a regular bike ride my butt hurts, I don’t think I could survive spin. It looks cool though. lol

  14. Adanna

I need to get back in shape too. I had a bit too much fun over the holidays but boy am I lazy to exercise. I’m trying to clean back up the diet but that’s a struggle too. Yeah, struggle is struggle it would be irresponsible for you to not take care of your health because you’re skinny.

    • MimiCuteLips

Adanna it is a struggle, I’ve not changed my diet which would be the hardest part for me. So I will just exercise to get the balance. hahahaa

  15. Christine @MomsNCharge

Girl….this post was everything!!! I wish people would understand that being thin/slim does not always mean being in shape! The struggle is definitely real. Thank you for encouraging me to get back on the wagon and start working out again. High school skinny here I come LOL

  16. Dannellys Rosario

The best part of working out is that you get to sleep like a baby. At least that is how I feel when I work out. It doesn’t matter what shape you are. It’s important to exercise to stay healthy. Good job!

  17. Rosey

It’s funny how people will comment. My son is 100% normal but he’s got a tiny rear. 😉 People always want to comment on it. He’s not ever overly amused. 😉

  18. Tiffani G. from MyMommyVents

Get it, girl! I don’t run unless someone is chasing me, but it seems like all the cool moms are doing Insanity this year. I know the skinny girl struggle all too well–iwell–I’ve had complete strangers offer to take me down South to their Big Mama.

    • MimiCuteLips

I am cracking up, I felt like you too. I wasn’t running unless someone was chasing me. I was shocked that I found a love for running. I don’t do any more than 3 miles though. I’m sure runners would turn their nose up at me for that short distance. Now if someone is chasing me I stand a greater chance of getting away.

  19. Debi

I am not a runner but I have always wanted to be. Good for you for making it past your stopping point last time.

  20. Rabia @TheLiebers

I don’t even mention my goal weight when I talk about getting in shape. People forget that at 5 feet even, I *should* weigh less than them!! I’m looking at a BMI chart and lots of pants that don’t fit anymore. That’s how I know I need to work out!

    • MimiCuteLips

Rabia, our clothes are the first sign of a change in weight. Up or down, our clothes start to fit differently. Oddly enough for me its my arms first, they suddenly can no longer breathe in my sleeves.

  21. Lenze

I understand your pain, even though I am not as skinny as you. It sucks when people say you “don’t need to work out”. It’s about being active and healthy regardless of size.
