First Day of Daycare an interview with a toddler

Hey Cuties,

This week was a big week for my household. My daughter started daycare and I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. I didn’t want to be the helicopter parent and just hover over her; even if my heart said I totally should. My daughter is very smart but very shy, we have gone over a variety of scenarios and she knows what to do. She is fully potty trained and can communicate her feelings. What am I worried about?

Daddy makes everything better.

The short answer is EVERYTHING! Since the day I found out she was a baby girl my worry meter kicked up a thousand levels. I want to protect her from the world but I know that isn’t realistic. I have to teach her, let her go and pray that she will remember the lessons.  I’ve been preparing her for this transition since the winter. I constantly talk to her about how the process is going to go down and check how she is feeling.

Leaning on Big Brother.

I was home with Nori for the first three months of her life. Then she had a Nanny for the next three months. Once she turned six months the Nanny turned into the babysitter. For the 3.5 years of life she has had one child care provider. She cared for her inside our home and at her home with one or two other kids.

Settling in…

I was worried how she would do in a classroom full of three-nagers. Would she get lost in the mix? Would she fit right in? Would she cry all day? She woke up Monday morning thrilled that the day had finally arrived. Thanks to Rosh Hashanah big brother was able to join us since school was closed. Nori was up, she was ready and she skipped to the front door of the center.  Once we stepped in Nori got silent, her eyes began to fill with water and so did mine. I reassured her that she was safe, she would have fun and that she could do it. Hello people my heart was hurting. This is my baby here. She held hands with the teacher and pretty much followed her around everywhere she went. lol She did not drop a tear and I didn’t either. Although I was a bit in my feelings I knew she was ready, it was time and she would just fine.

First Day of daycare

This hug filled my eyes.

I picked her up a little early and I couldn’t wait to hear about her day. I picked up some Chipotle, because it is Chipotle. I was all set to eat and recap her day. When I got there they were outside playing and Nori was still sitting by her teacher. lol She skipped to the truck with joy in her eyes. She had a great day and she couldn’t wait to share it with me.

Mommy is here…

I just wanted to take a selfie in the car to commensurate the day. She on the other hand asked to do a video and this is how it went.

Selecting the right childcare provider is extremely important. My children had the same babysitter and she took amazing care of them. I could go to work and know that they were in good hands. While this is a bit of an adjustment for us I know Nori is still in great care.

This smile says it all!

How did your children/nieces/nephew/grandchild/God child adjust to a new school, daycare of babysitter?

My oldest son was totally fine when I dropped him of for his first day of preschool. I wasn’t, but he was. My little guy cried every day when I dropped him off. EVERY. DAY.

  2. Christina Rice

Congrats to you all and especially Nori-kins!

How did my child adjust to first day of daycare, preschool or kindergarten – like a PRO! I mean you were there to welcome her into the world, so you know she does everything “Ziva-Diva Style”!

  3. Jeanette

She is ADORABLE!! It sounds like you found the right place for your little girl! She looks SO happy, you are doing a great job!

  4. lisa

This is exactly how it was for my oldest daughter. She was home for the first year of her life, but thankfully when she went to daycare she loved it! A great daycare is so important. So happy for your daughter’s first successful day!

  5. Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle

Aww. That picture of her hugging him is just the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. She is a doll.

  6. Ourfamilyworld

Nori is adorable. We moms tend to worry a lot, even if we know that our kids will be in good hands.

  7. Megan Elford

Awe! This reminds me of my kids’ first days of school. I was so proud and sad and happy all at the same time. It’s such a big transition!

  8. T. Espinoza

Awwww! This video had me over here smiling like a fool and a little teary. My babies are in kindergarten and 2nd grade and I definitely still got emotional on the first day of school. *sigh* I wish there was a pause button…

  9. Chubskulit Rose

Nori sems to love it. It’s pretty scary on the first day. I didn’t put my kids to daycare because I couldn’t bear the thought of being away from them, I chose not to.

  10. Jeanine

This is great, shes adorable! My kiddos did great. Especially my 4 year old going to Kindergarten for the first time. He cried the first 3 days in the beginning, but went and was a champ!

  11. Kirstin N. Fuller (@thetravelindiva)

Aww! So Happy Ms. Nori had a great first day of school! The pictures of her clinging to big brother made me tear up…lol

First day of school for preschoolers are stressful for both mom and child. I was crying when I took my kids to school the first time. It was difficult but the teachers were so reassuring and I found out that my kids were happy to have made new friends.

  13. Susan Quackenbush

The first day is always the hardest! I remember when my boys were that young, I felt like I was going to die without them! Good luck and best wishes!

  14. Mimi

The whisper in your ear with January 12 had me rolling!!! She is a beauty full of personality!! Glad she had an awesome day. I had a rough time with Kindergarten but like Nori my Addi was fine. Moving on to new chapters is so hard but when the children adjust well that makes it easier.

    • MimiCuteLips

Right, like I wasn’t there. hahaha Yes honey, when the children adjust it makes it all the better. They are tougher than we give them credit for.

  15. Lynndee

I had to stay in school and wait outside the classroom when my son was in preschool because he would cry if I leave. That was only for a few months though. 🙂

  16. Bonnie @wemake7

My little boy just started preschool last week and I was so nervous because he had never been away from me but I know it would be a positive experience for him. When we went on the first day he was really excited.

  17. Ann B

I remember when the kids went to daycare for the first time. It only took a day or two before they were excited to go. Some days they did not want to leave.

  18. Krystal

What a great FIRST moment! My son just started preschool this week and we are surely loving it.

  19. Joanna

This is too cute! I’m glad she’s enjoying herself.

  20. Bradley Finnearty

A really nice post. The first day of daycare has to be scary for a young one. The look on her face in the one picture says “what am i doing here.” Love it. What a cute little lady.

  21. Olivia

Aww your family is absolutely precious! I do not have kids, but I can only imagine how stressful it must be to drop your kids off with someone else for that first time…stressful for you AND her! Awesome post thanks for sharing!

  22. Siobhan (BeFree Project)

Aww… Nori is such a cutie! Yay for a successful first day of preschool.

  23. Stacie

Aw, she is so precious! First day of daycare is a big day. Glad it all worked out.

  24. Jaye@Curvatude

How sweet…I was so stressed back in the day when I had to deal with daycare, running from one side of town to the other, to work to school, that I think my kid & I both were just glad to have a safe (albeit super expensive) daycare where she could go and just play and learn

  25. Mia Jones

I am an owner of child care centers, so I have seen the ” First Day” many, many times and they are all different. You have some children that are ready for school with book bag and lunchbox in tow, you have some that are shy and you have some that hug on the teacher all day. And ALL of those scenarios are okay.

Nori seems as if she had a fantastic first day ( and mom did too, after the tears.) The picture of you two in the car is BEAUTIFUL.

    • MimiCuteLips

Thanks Mia, my son was certainly the I have my things I’m ready lets go type of kid. My daughter was totally different, I’m so proud that she is now enjoying her daycare. She doesn’t want to leave now when we pick her up.

  26. Tyra

Okay, that video was ADORABLE! Little lady was articulate and seems like she had a great time. (Sidenote: I could eat Chipotle every day LOL)

    • MimiCuteLips

Thanks Tyra, she is so shy in public but this is the kid I get at home. She is such a little old lady and I love it. I could totally eat Chipotle every day. lol

  27. Shawana

Soooooo adorable! I’m glad she enjoyed it. Great way to preserve the moment!

  28. Vashti (

Aww..Nori is such a big girl and a cutie. So glad the first day went well.

  29. Valerie

Awww, that is so adorable! She looked a bit nervous in the first pic, but I’m sure she is loosening up more and more each day. Such a sweet moment to document.

  30. LaKisha

Adorable! Love that your memorialized this special moment. She will always be able to look back on this with a smile. The photos are priceless.

  31. Christine @MomsNCharge

Ok so you already know how adorable Nori is. I’ve seen her a few times and this is the most Ive heard her talk. LOL I love it! It’s always harder on us making a new adjustment for the kiddos 🙂

  32. Tanay

When I say Nori is my FAVORITE! Lol
I’m so happy it’s going well.

  33. AC Mims

oh my goodness, my eyes welled up reading this because I remembered my daughter’s first day of daycare. Truth be told, I cried this year on her first day of 1st grade! It doesn’t get easier for me but at least I know she’s safe and learning.

  34. Kiwi

I think Nori is so adorable sooo cute! I love her and she did good with her little nap! Tell her I am a really big girl and I wish I could take more naps lol!
