Hey Cuties,
We are pressing the wrap it up button on September and October arrives in a few short days. HELLO LIBRA SEASON!!! #1018 Okay, so I get a bit excited about my birthday month but this excitement is for Halloween. I don’t decorate our home and I don’t enjoy the scary creepy things about Halloween. Why, you ask because I’m scary as he!!. What I do enjoy is the adorable little kiddies that ring my doorbell dressed in their uber cute costumes. A lot of parents buy costumes and that is totally okay if you are feeling a bit crafty I am going to show you how to make a snail costume.
Thus far on the blog I’ve taught you how to be Minnie Mouse/Mickey Mouse, Superhero and an owl. These tutorials are good for any age, so let’s add another into the mix. Last year Nori dressed up as a snail, it seems a bit random for a two year old but Turbo was her favorite movie. I was up for the challenge and I suckered Babe into assisting me a bit.
1. Tape 2. Hot Glue Gun 3. Scissors 4. Brown Paper 5. String/Ribbon 6. Piece of Cardboard 7. Puff Balls 8. Headband
SHELL:
This is regular brown paper you get inside of your packages when they arrive. Babe purchased this roll of paper from the hardware store. {Do people even call it that anymore?}
1. Cut long strips of paper 2. Crumble up the paper {this is the fun part the kids want to do.} 3. Roll/Twist up the paper.
You want to roll the paper into a circle but make it look like a cinnamon bun that sticks up in the middle. This is your snail shell so you can use this technique or come up with your own. Use pieces of tape to secure your roll as you continue to layer the paper. {Babe was a big help here, four hands were better than two.} Keep going until you have your desired size. I made the shell in two pieces and then secured them together.
After I made each half I reinforced them with the hot glue gun. The glue dries fast so you have to move quickly. You can also use tape to keep it together just be sure you can’t see it from the outside. I used clear tape so it wasn’t so obvious. After I secured each shell I put them together; you can tell where they meet from the picture above.
BACK BOARD:
Cut out a square piece of cardboard {top left}, the size is based on the size of the shell. I cut out two strips of yellow polka dot ribbon. You can use ribbon, string, or whatever you want. I placed the square against the shell to make sure it was a good size. Then I placed it in the middle of my daughters back to make sure it was a good size. I measured my ribbon by attaching it to the cardboard with a binder clip. Then I placed it on her back and wrapped the string about her shoulder, underneath her arm pit and back to the cardboard again. I clipped off any of the extra ribbon; then secured the ribbon to the board with the hot glue gun. Now it should fit like a back pack, you want a snug fit with no slack so your shell doesn’t flop around. Once you have it fitted the way you want attach the back board to the shell. {I left Nori’s ribbons open because I wanted to tie them closed.}
HEADBAND:
I had headbands left over from Nori’s 1’s Bee Day, so I just used what I had and you can toot. I wrapped the ribbon around the headband and secured it with the glue gun. After that was done I adding in my antennas. I used pipe cleaners to make them stand up; I ended up making them thicker after taking this image.
Once I got the antennas right I used the hot glue gun to attach a yellow pom pom on the top of each tentacle.
Babe added in a couple of zip ties to make sure the paper didn’t come undone.
My snail was all set to go although you can’t tell by her facial expression. I got her top and sweatpants from the local store for less than $10 total. I paired them with a pair of faux Ugg boots; I put a pair of leggings under her pants so she was comfy and warm without having to wear a coat. Note her ribbons tied into bows on each shoulder, this allowed me to tighten them up as much as I like.
Her snail costume was a total hit!

Halloween costumes for kids should not be expensive. If we have the right resources, a creative mind and an eye for detail, we can create one special Halloween costume for our little ones.
