Love the Hair You Wear {Event Recap}

Hey Cuties,

My Hump Day Wednesday is jammed packed with things to do. I fly out to the New Orleans for the Essence Festival in the morning.  I’ve done all the laundry in the house, I’ve been cleaning and packing and cleaning off the DVR and about fifty other things. I always feel like I have time to do this and that and then I’m always in a rush. I will be posting to social media {Twitter, IG, FB & Snap} the entire time so make sure you take the trip with me. Hello, the ultimate #FatSnacks.

Love the Hair You Wear 2

On Sunday I went to the Love the Hair You Wear event in the city.  When I heard the title I said “Oh, that is me.” In my out loud voice. This was my first time going and while I didn’t know what to expect I knew I would see some dope hairstyles and make new friends.

Love the Hair You Wear 1

I met up with my Curlfriend Diana, Sisters with Beauty

It was a Chuck Taylor and legs out type of day for the both of us.

Since going natural eleven years ago I’ve made friends off the strength of my hair, their hair and or hair products. That never happened in my relaxed hair days. It is like a Universal “Hey Girl” no matter where I go and I love it. Something so simple has bonded me with some amazing folks. Chance meetings have turned into long lasting friendships.

Soon as I got in I immediately checked out the vendors. Because women be shopping… I made my first stop at the Nu Natural Organics table and after conversing about the importance of knowing what we are putting into our bodies I purchased a Lemongrass Lotion Stick. All of their products are free of synthetics and artificial additives.  I’m trying to keep this pretty brown looking good and feeling soft.

This vendor was a lot of fun. They make their own jewelry and lipsticks. Yes, to both of these things. This spoke to the craft queen that exist in me. They had some of the cutest loc jewelry. I can’t commit to any hairstyle for a long period of time so I will never have locs but I admire them so much.

Love the Hair You Wear 5

I met one of my Cuties @AppleMacMG for the first time. She said she knew it was me by my sunglasses. Ha! Be your brand people I’m telling you. I do’s this.

This vendor had one of my vices, sunglasses. I just told you about my affinity for new sunglasses so I had to fight the feeling. She also had some really nice wire rings with stones, I have baby fingers so it is hard for me to find rings that fit. She had some by size and others that were adjustable, my size 5 finger appreciated that.

Love the Hair You Wear 6

Let me back up a bit, this event took place at Blind Whino in Washington, DC. I’ve been here for a couple of things but I freaking love this place. It has so much personality, mark my words I will host an event in this building. The building itself is art and then they have art hanging on the walls that you can actually purchase. The Cherry Blossom tree you see is made out of tissue paper and wire, so cute.

Love the Hair You Wear 7

This was a hair event so I went around snapping pictures of hair. This gray beauty was one of my favorites. I can’t wait until my hair looks like this. My material grandmother had hair like this and I adored it. I would play in her fresh roller set because her curls were perfect and had great bounce. She was a walking commercial for gorgeous hair.

Love the Hair You Wear 8

I just told you how I adored locs but would never have any of my own. These ladies are a great example of my adoration. The sister on the left looks to have sister locs; they are much smaller in size and I love the way she curled the ends. The sister on the right has beautiful locs as well, she has what I call classic black. I love jet black hair, there is something about it that just gets to me. 80% of my hair is all jet black right now, the frontal 20% is hot pink.

I swear by a dope haircut. I’m at the barber every two weeks for a fresh line. These ladies were just chatting it up while I was snapping it up. Diana recently went from a head full of hair this dope cut. She is the author of Butterfly Transition. That was the book that helped me in my Daddy Issues blog post. The other young lady on the right recently cut her locs into this dope cut. It had been on her mind but she finally took the plunge. She has length on the other side and had a cute side swoop loc action going on.

Hair Model @IAmMessy

Hair on fleek, color and coils popping and her outfit is giving me life. Color is such a great way to kick your personal style up a notch. She had the perfect hues for her pretty brown and it took her cut to the next level.

She has her color in the top and the classic black around the sides and back. The copper tones are perfect.

One of the dope things I love about natural hair is its versatility.  Our hair textures very from one extreme to another. Our style range is limitless; these pictures are examples of that.  This Cutie on the left is a member of the MimiCuteLips tribe. I loved that she introduced herself, she knew I was going to be here because I put it in my newsletter. If you ever see me out, please stop me and introduce yourself. I’m friendly I chat and give hugs, but I love to meet the village I’ve created. Click HERE to sign up for my weekly newsletter.

Hail Model

This young lady was one of the hair models, Curls was the event sponsor and the models hair was styled using a variety of their products. Shout out to her winged eye liner though. Her hair is braided up in the back with the top loose. Her color is only on the very tips of her classic black hair. Love it.

This was my favorite part of the event.  When we think hair we think ladies but what about the fellas? They have hair as well; my Babe has hair down his back. As each model came up VeCoya would asked them how they styled their hair, what products they used, if they liked it and would they use the products again. These dudes here had me in tears. First off they took over the interview, they wanted to make sure she was asking them just as many questions as she asked the ladies.

They proudly shared their styling products and techniques and what they thought about the product. It wasn’t supposed to be funny but it was. I loved that they wanted to be included, I love that they weren’t afraid to have their voices heard in a room full of women. After they left the stage the other fellas would dap them up. Yes, to the Brotherhood.

What is a dope hair event without a picture of my glorious Mohawk? Diana and I had been doing everything but breaking out in a full on twerk session. The DJ was everything, so much so we found out where we can find him on a regular basis. I love music, I love good music and I love to dance. While others were out checking out the vendors she and I were working social media, singing and having a slight dance off all the while serving up these dope haircuts.

We had a ball, I love to support local events as often as possible. I also love great energy and this event was all of that. They graciously sent us home with full size hair products by Curls, I can’t wait to try them out on my next twist out.

I definitely do not love my hair. I was cursed with natural curls and pay a small fortune for keratin treatments to get rid of them.

  2. Jeanette

It looks like it was a fun day with a lot of good friends. I’m always on the lookout for a good hair product will make my hair look more alive and shiny and not quite so flat! Maybe one of these would help.

  3. mark and kate

More power for you flaunting your locks! As women, it’s our best feature (in my opinion) next to a well-cared for face.

  4. Kemkem

Haha! You should have included a picture of you doing the almost full on twerk moves! I love all the natural hairstyles. You’re right, there is a special bond l feel with people who have gone natural… For me, it’s freeing, especially when it comes to water. Looks like it was a fun event 🙂

  5. Pam

What a fun event! How cool that you got to meet someone who reads your blog there, too. That’s so fun!

  6. Keisha

Sounds like a really good time! We are the most diverse people on the planet! Those sisters’ heads were layed for the heavens. I hate I’m missing Essence Fest this year 🙁 do enjoy!

  7. Chrishelle

I have always loved my hair. Back in the 8o’s, I was a big hair wearing chick. Now in my 40’s I love it short and straight. Looks like a fun event.

  8. Donna Shana

Totally my type of event! I love anything about embracing and loving the skin you are in.

  9. Rese

You did capture some great images of hair. I am so boring. Literally, the same long hair forever and ever I am too scared to cut it! I would love to try that Lemongrass stick though.

  10. Jenn @ EngineerMommy

This sounds like it was a fabulous event with wonderful people. I haven’t always love the hair I wear, but I’ve learned to accept and embrace it.

    • MimiCuteLips

I love that Jenn, we all kind of have a phase or three where we don’t like what we see in the mirror. The amazing part is that doesn’t and shouldn’t last forever.

  11. Sarah

What a fantastic event, love the name of it!

  12. Brandy

Oh this is awesome! I love seeing all of the events you go to, this one looks like a great time!

  13. Liz Mays

It must have been so cool hearing how everyone is able to style their hair. I love the styles people were rocking!

    • MimiCuteLips

It was Liz, I’m such a lazy natural that I don’t like to do research. Hearing what people use and how they used it is perfect way for me to learn about new products.

  14. Angelic Sinova

What a fun event! One of my friends is in inspiring hair styler and she recently went to Atlanta for a hair show and oh my, all the hair there was AMAZING!

  25. Eva

All this fabulous hair! Looks like this was a good time. And that is a beautiful event space! Can’t wait to see what you do there 🙂

  26. Tia @ FinanciallyFitandFab

What an awesome event! You’re matching shoes are cute too! I haven’t always loved the hair I wear but I have grown to love it the past 3-4 years. Prior, I had always worn my hair straight but never had a relaxer. It is nice to wear my natural curls most of the time. 🙂

  27. Joanna

I love natural hair events to look at all the hair-spiration. lol Looks like a great time. Would like to get my hands on SisterswithBeauty’s book.

  28. Christine @MomsNCharge

Before you “backed it up”, I kept thinking, “wow, where is this place cause it looks amazing?” Let’s host an event there together cause it definitely looks dope LOL. I agree in that ever since I went natural, it’s a universal “hey girl” whenever I come across most other naturals. I just adore the community and this event looks like it celebrated that.

  29. Kasi

Looks like a dope event, great recap. I love the pictures and I’m loving everyone’s natural hairstyles. You and your curlfriend looked cute in your outfits and Chucks!
