Do You Know How to Create Exclusive Faux Fur Sneakers?

Hey Cuties,

I’m on a serious fashion kick right now. Not just fashion but DIY fashion, I love making things my own. The Golden Globes were on over the weekend and the fashion was killer. New York Fashion Week is coming up and I’ve got ideas, some are new ideas and others are ideas I’ve been holding onto in my mind. I’m oozing with creativity and I want to get it all out.

Converse Pro Blaze – Before

New York Fashion Week is coming up again and I’m thrilled to go for the second time. I shared my first Fashion Week experience last September and although it was amazing it was warm. This time around it is in the dead of winter. That means the hawk will be out and taking prisoners in the mean streets of New York. Fashion week means standing and waiting and more standing and more waiting. I had on heels the last time, because I wanted to be all cute and stuff, girl bye. You already know that we suffer for fashion; but this time I’m going to slay fashion with comfort. Lesson learned.

Converse Pro Blaze – Before

After attending my first show I learned that you will see people dressed for the ball and to run a marathon inside of the same show. THERE ARE NO RULES TO FASHION! With that notion in mind I decided to rock a pair of sneakers but totally funk them up a bit.

Supplies: Faux Fur, Spray Paint & Glue

I’m a lover of Converse so that was a no brainer for me when deciding what shoe to work with. My only requirement was that my shoe of choice has structure to it, that makes it easier to work with. I went to the clearance section of the Converse Outlet and fell in love with a Converse Pro Blaze sneaker. Usually I’m an All Star girl but not today. Original price $80, clearance price $40 + 40% off + tax + $5 off coupon = $20 SCORE!

First round of spray paint

I purchased two pair of these sneakers because I loved them so much as is. This pair is for strictly for the hack, I wanted a black sneaker so I spray painted them black. Babe got me a matte black multi-purpose spray paint. The can says it was good to use on rubber so he knew leather would be just fine and it totally was. I love wearing sneakers and my friend told me to check out next time I wanted a new pair. I have so many shoes but I always make sure to wear a different pair everyday!

Pretty good for the first spray.

My plan was to put on two coats and that worked out perfectly. I did a pretty good job with the first round of spray painting. You want to do this outside so you aren’t inhaling the fumes. When you spray there is a kick back of mist that will coat your surroundings. Peep the black grass on the right side of the picture. After spraying them down I set it in the garage to dry for a couple of hours.

The second spray is done and they have dried, my goal here was to go back and get some of the thread details that I missed the first time. With the bold mustard color, the missed areas were obvious. I sprayed the inside of the tongue a bit as well. They are ready for the next step.

Faux Fur

After they dried I was ready to add the faux fur {from the craft store} to the tongue for the shoe. I had mixed feelings on how I would achieve this look. I could go the hot glue gun route but I didn’t think it was the best long term option. I went for the E6000 glue, it takes longer to dry but it is more durable. I measured my faux fur against the tongue of my shoe to determine how long I needed each strip. I didn’t use a ruler I just eyeballed ti and cut. My strips are narrow but the tongue is wide so I used two pieces on each tongue.

One side done, other side coated with glue

I already have one fur strip on the left. I put the glue all over the right side and I’m just going to stick the fur to it. Tip: Make sure your fur is going in the same direction.

First shoe is done

I cut my strips a little longer than the tongue. This allowed me to wrap the extra fur over the back of the tongue. It is coming along nicely though. It doesn’t take a long time and doesn’t require crafting skills.

All done and laced up

I love the end result, they look so cute. I can’t wait to rock them, I’m going to pair them with my boyfriend jeans I just made. Ooooohhhh, killing them. I can’t wait to say “I made these and my jeans” when people inquire about my dope look.

Side shot

This total project cost about $32. I wanted to include a side shot so you can see the detailing of the star on the side.
