Event Alert: Have You Ever Been to Jazz in the Gardens?

Hey Cuties,

We are still knee deep in winter but I am thinking warm thoughts like sun in my face, movement in my waist and my toes in the sand. I am thinking of Miami which I affectionately call the 305 — a short flight to one of my favorite places. This time I have a bit more motivation to get there. I love to eat, but I also love to dance like nobody is watching.  Who am I kidding; watch and enjoy the show, the Jazz in the Gardens to be exact.

Jazz In The Gardens 2017

Jazz in the Gardens {JITG} is the City of Miami Gardens’ premier entertainment event. They have kept the party going for 11 years.  Jazz in the Gardens celebrates diversity, culture and art through a variety of musical genres. It is a dope way to hear some of your favorites and be introduced to others.

This music festival is a must-do event for the spring.  It takes place every March and officially kicks off the music festival season. The experience is more than just music and arts.  You also get beaches, shopping, golf courses, 5-star restaurants. Did I mention shopping and eating because that is so important.

Mayor Gilbert

I had the pleasure of chatting with the man in the mix, Mayor Oliver Gilbert.  He is excited about us coming to the city of Miami Gardens.

Q: Why are events like this important to the city?

A: Miami is so rich and diverse and we are blessed with good weather. JITG started 12 years ago, in a small parking lot for our residents. Now it has grown into an international event that brings people from across the country. It is based on the basic principle of coming out and having fun, dancing in the aisle with the people you came with and the new ones you have met. Just let everything go for a couple of days and just enjoy the experience.

Q: Does the city rely on tourism?

A: No, we are a working class, middle-class city that became incorporated in 2003 as an official city.  However, we are still developing the economic structure of the city.

Q: JITG is branching out into the art world, what is the art scene like in the city?

A: This is an extension of what has been going on in South Florida for a couple of years now. The art festival is sponsored by the Knight Foundation and it provides access to film and art as well as a spoken word contest.  It started as a concert and people enjoyed the big party so much that we want to expand the JITG brand to include other art forms and opportunities for people to come and get exposure while enjoying Miami Gardens.

Q: For someone who has never been to Miami Gardens what are some of the things we need to eat and do when we come to your town?

A: I was born in Miami Gardens and raised five minutes from the stadium. You must eat at Finga Licking Restaurant, owned by Elrich Prince & DJ. Khaled, Lorna’s Restaurant, soul food and Caribbean food.  Check out the Race Track & Casino; and check out the Hard Rock Stadium the home of the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricane.

Q: How will you as Mayor maintain the inclusion and warm open arms Miami Gardens has always had with the new administration?

A: We will not just maintain the warm and open arms, but will expand it especially in Miami Gardens.  We believe in bigger dreams and bigger efforts.  When you are the Mayor, you have to govern and lead in spite of politics. You have an obligation and responsibility to get some things done for the people that you love and I take that seriously.  We will pick up every day and work.

You hear the music festival that is cool and all, but what you really want to know is…. WHO IS GOING TO BE THERE? Let’s chat about that for a minute. JITG is like old school meets new school meets just starting school. That means something for everyone. The hilarious comedian  Rickey Smiley is the host. Old School favorites such as Morris Day and the Time, The Bird, Jungle Love are stone cold party songs. Do you remember that dance? Will Downing will make you fall in love at the first sound of his voice. His music is what you put on when you need to negotiate with your Boo. Chante Moore and her beautiful voice can break a glass. I think Chante’s Got a Man at Home might be my favorite.  The ever so handsome and talented Common will be there.  I will have to resist the urge to faint (my gosh this man is fine and his lyrics will change your life).  LL Cool J featuring DJ Z-Trip. Listen I grew up in the Bronx at the time when LL was busting on the scene. His music is the soundtrack to my childhood and I still know all the words. My Philly favorites will also be there, The Roots who can do everything and I love that about them.  The incredibly talented Jill Scott (if you don’t know her music, I need you to evaluate your life and the decisions you have made).  Robin Thicke I love his second CD and it is one of my all-time favorites.  You can cleanse your soul with Smokie Norful (his music is what the world needs).

I’ve been to Miami once, but never explored to far out since we were down there to go on a cruise. I loved it though. The diversity is a wonderful thing to see. We have a jazz festival that comes to our area each year. Love the vibe of sitting in the grass with friends and family and letting it all wash over you 🙂
