I’ve long shared my love for TV and the abundance of time I spend watching it. Well, the winter break is over and some of my old faithful shows have returned. OH MY GOSH did you see Grey’s Anatomy last week? Shut yo mouth! It was so freaking good. I can’t wait for this weeks episode. The Post winter break also introduced us to a few new shows. Hello, I’ve got new love drugs to share.
Black Lightning: This was an unusual choice for me, I’m not a comic chick I know nothing about any of the superhero movies nor have a watched them. But I will watch Marvel Black Panther though. Anyway, I heard a little talk about Black Lightning but not much. I saw a clip and it instantly made me curious, so Babe and I set a recording for it on the DVR. On my Furlough day “massive eye roll” I got caught up on episode one, it originally premiered on January 16th.
My first thought, I’m hooked. I was watching a good ass show not just a comic. I think I loved that the most, you don’t have to be into comics at all to watch this show.
Now let me tell you what it is about:
Black Lightning is an American superhero television series developed by Salim Akil, airing on The CW. Jefferson Pierce, retired from his superhero persona Black Lightning nine years ago after seeing the effects it had on his family, is forced to become a vigilante again when the rise of the local gang called the 100 leads to increased crime and corruption in his community. It is based on the DC Comics character of the same name.
It stars Cress Williams (Scooter from Living Single) as Black Lightning. Actress China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams play his daughters. Actress Christine Adams plays his ex-wife whom he wants back. She is pure black girl magic. I didn’t know about her until this show and she is a beauty. Come on brown skin and razor haircut. Actor Marvin Jones III is a villain and James Remar famously know as Richard Wright on Sex and the City is the oldest friend of Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, who serves as a father figure and mentor to the masked crime fighter.

Black Lightning airs Tuesday night 9 PM ET on the CW
The Chi: Is another show Babe and I are cuddling on the sofa to watch. We saw previews and off the break, we had to record it. I knew Lena Waithe created the show and I’m low key obsessed with her. Lena made Emmy history (Sept. 2017) as the first African-American woman to win for comedy writing. She writes on the Netflix hit Master of None which she also stars in. She is totally black girl magic and after listening to her on the Essence, Yes Girl podcast I was sold.
I was hooked from episode one, it gave me a bit of The Wire feel and that show is legendary. I didn’t know most of the characters in the show and that was refreshing.
The Chi is an American drama series created by Lena Waithe a fateful turn of events sends shockwaves through a community on the Southside of Chicago and connects the lives of Emmett, Brandon, Ronnie and Kevin in unexpected ways. The pilot premiered on Showtime on January 7th.
Sonja Sohn, who played Kima Greggs from The Wire is in it and the hit movie Moonlight cast member Alex Hibbert plays Kevin.
In my excitement, I replied to creator Lena Waithe’s Insta Story and she wrote me back saying Thanks. You know this caused me to fan-girl a bit more. Because Lena is Bae and she heard her fans saying they want to watch but don’t have Showtime you can use her code LENA at check out on Showtime.com to get a special 30-day free trial to watch. Offer ends 1/31/18
The Chi airs Sunday night 10 PM ET on Showtime.
9-1-1: This is another we saw previews for and had to record. Also Angela freaking Bassett. This woman is 59 years old and she is still hella bad. Not only is she beautiful but she is still really close to that “Tina Turner” body she had in What’s Love Got to Do With It. Aisha Hinds is also in this show and yeah she is another one I totally go fan-girl over. This show is filled with action but you also get to know the main characters and see how their personal lives play out.
This show is drama meets action, meets real life and a few other things. It is good, you quickly cheer for the characters you love. Oh, and they have already secured a Season 2.
9-1-1: Explores the high-pressure experiences of police, paramedics, and firefighters who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations. They must try to balance saving people with solving problems in their own lives.
9-1-1 airs Wednesday night 9 PM ET on the FOX
