Have You Seen All This Black Magic On My TV?

Hey Cuties,

I’ve long shared my love for TV and the abundance of time I spend watching it. Well, the winter break is over and some of my old faithful shows have returned. OH MY GOSH did you see Grey’s Anatomy last week? Shut yo mouth! It was so freaking good. I can’t wait for this weeks episode. The Post winter break also introduced us to a few new shows. Hello, I’ve got new love drugs to share.black lightning new black shows

Black Lightning: This was an unusual choice for me, I’m not a comic chick I know nothing about any of the superhero movies nor have a watched them. But  I will watch Marvel Black Panther though. Anyway, I heard a little talk about Black Lightning but not much. I saw a clip and it instantly made me curious, so Babe and I set a recording for it on the DVR. On my Furlough day “massive eye roll” I got caught up on episode one, it originally premiered on January 16th.

My first thought, I’m hooked. I was watching a good ass show not just a comic. I think I loved that the most, you don’t have to be into comics at all to watch this show.

Now let me tell you what it is about:

Black Lightning is an American superhero television series developed by Salim Akil, airing on The CW.  Jefferson Pierce, retired from his superhero persona Black Lightning nine years ago after seeing the effects it had on his family, is forced to become a vigilante again when the rise of the local gang called the 100 leads to increased crime and corruption in his community.  It is based on the DC Comics character of the same name.

It stars Cress Williams (Scooter from Living Single) as Black Lightning. Actress China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams play his daughters.  Actress Christine Adams plays his ex-wife whom he wants back. She is pure black girl magic. I didn’t know about her until this show and she is a beauty. Come on brown skin and razor haircut. Actor Marvin Jones III is a villain and James Remar famously know as Richard Wright on Sex and the City is the oldest friend of Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning, who serves as a father figure and mentor to the masked crime fighter.

Black Lightning airs Tuesday night 9 PM ET on the CW

The Chi new black shows

The Chi: Is another show Babe and I are cuddling on the sofa to watch.  We saw previews and off the break, we had to record it. I knew Lena Waithe created the show and I’m low key obsessed with her.  Lena made Emmy history (Sept. 2017) as the first African-American woman to win for comedy writing. She writes on the Netflix hit Master of None which she also stars in. She is totally black girl magic and after listening to her on the Essence, Yes Girl podcast I was sold.

I was hooked from episode one, it gave me a bit of The Wire feel and that show is legendary. I didn’t know most of the characters in the show and that was refreshing.

The Chi is an American drama series created by Lena Waithe a fateful turn of events sends shockwaves through a community on the Southside of Chicago and connects the lives of Emmett, Brandon, Ronnie and Kevin in unexpected ways.  The pilot premiered on Showtime on January 7th.

Sonja Sohn, who played Kima Greggs from The Wire is in it and the hit movie Moonlight cast member Alex Hibbert plays Kevin.

In my excitement, I replied to creator Lena Waithe’s Insta Story and she wrote me back saying Thanks. You know this caused me to fan-girl a bit more. Because Lena is Bae and she heard her fans saying they want to watch but don’t have Showtime you can use her code LENA at check out on Showtime.com to get a special 30-day free trial to watch. 9-1-1 new black shows

9-1-1: This is another we saw previews for and had to record. Also Angela freaking Bassett. This woman is 59 years old and she is still hella bad. Not only is she beautiful but she is still really close to that “Tina Turner” body she had in What’s Love Got to Do With It.  Aisha Hinds is also in this show and yeah she is another one I totally go fan-girl over. This show is filled with action but you also get to know the main characters and see how their personal lives play out.

This show is drama meets action, meets real life and a few other things. It is good, you quickly cheer for the characters you love. Oh, and they have already secured a Season 2.

9-1-1: Explores the high-pressure experiences of police, paramedics, and firefighters who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations. They must try to balance saving people with solving problems in their own lives.

So I’m clearly not watching TV enough because these are not on my screen!! I’ve been really into Grown-ish though. I love it and it’s making me miss college!

    • MimiCuteLips

That is another good one, I’ve been watching that one as well. I love that it isn’t A Different World copy. It has its own lane.

  2. Sheena Steward

I haven’t seen Black Lightening but The Chi and 9-1-1 are definitely being watched in my house. They’re both great shows and I’m ready to see how all the characters develop with both shows. Lena is so dope! You can’t help but root for her.

  3. Nanekia Ansari

Awesome post and you definitely just listed all of my TV favs, too! I’m not into comics either and I was skeptical about Black Lightning, but I’m totally hooked.

    • MimiCuteLips

Yes! I think that is what I love the most about the show. It is incredibly good and you don’t need any interest of knowledge about comics.

  5. robin rue

I’ve seen ads for it and I am looking forward to checking it out one of these days. My tv must-watch list keeps getting longer and longer, but this show is DEFINITELY on the list.

I love the action in 9-1-1 and the heart that it takes to get the job done.

Grey’s is a cult classic. Last week left my mouth open.

Guess I am just not watching the correct tv shows. Haven’t seen any of these shows yet. Guess I will have to do a search and see when they come on and when.

    • MimiCuteLips

Yes, I listed the day, time and network they come on in my area, but I’m in DC. They are all new shows, they started after the new year.

  8. Tomiko

I watched 911 last night and it was awesome! I think “they” are finally getting it! #blackmagic

  9. Terri Steffes

I am all about The Chi. My daughter lives in Chicago and I want to see if it shows real places in the Windy City. I also love the story line.

  10. Tomi C

I’ve read great reviews on 911 and Black Lightning but wasn’t aware of The Chi. I may have to add it to my queue and I’m really excited to see China Anne McClain. Haven’t seen her since her days on that one Tyler Perry tv series when she was much younger. My kids told me she played in a Disney series not too long ago but I never saw it.

  11. Emily

These all seem like great shows! Grown-ish is a great show, so funny! I tend to watch the same few shows and I need to try a few new ones, but I never know where to start. Thanks for all of these recommendations!

  12. Sarah Bailey

These sound like some great shows, I’m not sure how many of them we get over here. I know we have Black Lightning on Netflix which we will definitely be watching.

  15. Heather

I LOVE Angela Bassett! I didn’t know she was going to be in a new show! I definitely need to check that one out 🙂

  16. Heather

I’m certain we’ll be seeing this movie soon. My kids are big fans of Marvel. Anything superhero is a big thing in our family.

  17. Ricci

Is it bad that the only show out of all of these listed I have heard of is Black Magic?? I need to check the others out!!

  18. Carissa

These are all great pics! My husband has me hooked on The Chi, my mom got me into 911 and I haven’t watched the other show but I’m sure it’s coming my husband is a total comic junkie and we talked about watching because the star is Scooter from Living Single LOL!

  19. Elle (CleverlyChanging)

I love seeing people who look like me on the big screen. Sometimes, watching TV and seeing people act who are black is motivating that regardless of the adversity we’re up against, life can and will go on.

  20. Sarah Honey

We don’t watch much TV. This looks like a great show. Will have to add it to our must-watch list.

  21. Ola

I don’t watch a ton of TV but there are a couple of shows that I like to tun into once in a while. I did see the previews for Chi and it does indeed sound interesting.

  22. Sandy N Vyjay

These are some new series that we need to check out, they all look promising. But yes Grey’s Anatomy has been our running favourite for a long time. We are glued to it.

  23. Chubskulit Rose

I haven’t watch much TV these days, I just don’t have time for it. Glad to know there are so many options to watch.

  24. Jenn

I have, and it is fabulous! Hoping my kids see a day when an all black cast is not something to point out, it’s just the norm. Any-whoo, l still need to check out Black Lightening. Oh, I am in-love with Angela freaking Bassett and digging 9-1-1 so far. Hoping it lasts.

  25. Sara Welch

For as much as I love watching TV, I feel like I miss a lot. Always new shows popping up that I’ve never seen, like this some of these.

  26. Bohemian Babushka

Babushka hasn’t watched any of these shows, but will definitely be sharing the Black Lightning recommendation with my eldest grandson El Dr. It’s wonderful that there’s finally a hero, on tv, as the main character, that looks like him. At 11 years old that’s a very important thing. Gracias for the recommendation.

  27. Kita

Listen the melanin out here on tv is such a beautiful thing. I am so excited for all the shows and the movies coming our way. Long overdue. The magic is real.

  28. Antoinette Cain

I have to watch 9-1-1. I’ve heard so many great things about this show. I’m not surprised though. Angela Basset kills it every time.

  29. Sanaa Brooks

Okay, so I have to watch Black Lightning with bae next month and The Chi. Lol I’m not a comics person but if it has to do with superpowers I’m all for it! I’ve seen the ads for The Chi but I still haven’t checked it out yet. So now we have two new shows to watch together since he who must not be named decided to go ahead and watch the show we started without me. LOL (He claims it’s because I watched the first show we started without him, but he hated it! LOL I thought I was doing him a favor. Sigh lol)

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    • MimiCuteLips

Yes, you guys will enjoy it. I’m not a comics person either but it is still really good.

hahahaha Sometimes I hate waiting for him to watch. lol

  30. Anosa

Man I feel like y’all have some incredible shows by the time they come to the UK we are a season or two behind but I would love to see 9-1-1

  31. LoriKemi

I had no clue these existed – thanks for sharing this post! I’m really interested in the Chi especially, but it’s exciting to see so much more #blackgirlmagic, #blackboyjoy and #blackexcellence on screen – major thanks to Shonda Rhimes, Lee Daniels and Ava DuVernay for paving the way.

  32. Kim

I love the Chi. I have to watch 9-1-1. I didn’t even know about it until now, and Angela Bassett is in it. I just LOVE her.
