How to learn photography

This week I posted this picture on Instagram and it was popping. It has about 200 likes, but more importantly, it has 76 comments. I don’t post Christmas pictures of what we got for Christmas but Babe got me a Canon Rebel T6i DSLR camera. This has been on my list for a minute, I did camera research before settling out on the camera that would be the best fit for what I’m looking for. I obviously wanted great pictures, but I also wanted to do video. I just told you I’m doing more videos this year. In my sharing, I asked the question “What new thing do you want to learn in 2018?

The responses ranged from photography, editing, learning a new language, learning stocks to anything else you can think of. It was a great way to encourage one another to try something new. What was hilarious was the number of people who have various models of my camera that said they want to finally learn to use it. Babe invested in MimiCuteLips and I appreciate that, so I want to make sure he gets a good return on his investment. With that said, I am determined to learn to use my camera.

I’ve checked out some YouTube videos, you know because YouTube University will teach you all kind of things. However, I am a hands-on type of learner. I want to talk fancy about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and how to work natural light. I know nothing but stay tuned, your girl is going to wow ya! I roped in my boo The Style Medic to go on his photography journey with me. She is leaps and bounds ahead of me but I’ve learned a thing or two from her over the years. She is great at posing and getting the look, pictures are more than just working the camera. I too want to be the total package. Owww!

See, I follow good direction and the shots are hot! Fun Facts: We did this shoot last weekend in 30-degree weather. Despite the cold, there was an odd amount of people out walking around and getting in our way. This sweatshirt was supposed to be a DIY tutorial but never happened. I made it myself though, the shirt was $5 and I used an x-acto knife to do the rest. I can’t wait to wear it again in the summer so I don’t have to wear a shirt underneath.

Great ways to learn a craft:

  1. If you know someone who is good at the said thing (such as Olga Topchii, https://www.olgatopchii.com/ click now
to check her work out) ask if you can intern or pay them to teach you.
  2. Exchanging services is another great way. Maybe you have a skill they want to learn and they have a skill you want to learn. Teach one another.
  3. Check your county programs, they are usually cheaper than going somewhere else.
  4. Check discount sites like Groupon and Living Social they are a great way to try it and see if you want to continue with it.
  5. Ask Facebook, you might be surprised at the talents and skill sets the people you already know have.

The Style Medic and I decided to learn photography together and also shoot one another. This is a great way to learn, to practice and get in those dope shots we want for free. I want to know what new thing you want to take on in 2018. It can be something big or small, there is no judgment here. If you want to be a stripper I am here for it, it requires incredible upper both strength that I simply don’t have but whateve! Don’t be afraid to speak your truth, this is a safe space.

You better work it with these pictures! I’ve recently been studying tarot cards so that’s one thing I want to become better at and enhance my gift.

  2. Monique Tillman

Pics are gorgeous. I’m to the goodwill to get me a sweat shirt to cut up. That’s to cute. It’s a great feeling when your love invest in your dreams.

  3. Tiffany Haywood

First – your shots came out aaaah-may-zing! Kudos to The Style Medic! For me, I’m determined to learn more about the coding side of things. Yet I think you may have sparked a bit more in me about my DSLR (my Big Girl Camera) as well. My Hubby invested in me back when I first started and I took a bunch of online courses but kinda started relying on my phone. I would love to pick up my girl a bit more this year and maybe get in front of it a bit more too 😉

  4. Jay Colby

That’s great that you’re learning something new in 2018. This year I would like to learn more the stock market and investing.

  5. Joanna

Great tips. My focus this year is SEO and Youtube. I would love to edit my videos better and get more page views. Working on both. I’m pretty decent at photography, but there’s nothing wrong with doing better.

  6. Ola

That’s great that you’re learning photography. I’ve begun looking into exchanging services myself.

  7. Kayvona

Yassss! Loving the photos! I took a photography class in high school which definitley is paying off now but I definitley would love going to a class now just for some refreshers plus it was like 10 years ago so I’m sure there’s probably new techniques lol

    • MimiCuteLips

That is what I want to do, take a class then put it to use. Then take another class. A refresher might put you on to some new things, but at least you have a good foundation.

  8. Alli Smith

A new camera is always exciting and I’m looking forward to seeing your new videos. The photoshoot is awesome. You look beautiful and natural.

  9. robin rue

I loooooove my Canon Rebel! You are going to love it, too! There are so many great photos you can take with it.

  10. Amber Myers

These are some amazing shots! I want to learn more about photography, so this is helpful. I am always Googling how to take a better photo!

  11. Danielle

Partnering with a friend/colleague to bring your work to life and learn from each other is such a smart idea, I’m sure it’s fun too and you save a few coins. I’m curious to see the DIY for the sweatshirt, I have an exacto knife and now I want to cut something up! Love the pics.

  12. Kasi

That is great, photography is so fun! I’ve learned a lot, but have so much to learn about it! You are def working the camera in these pictures!

  13. Courtney CJ

Yes, a camera!! Excellent gift. For me I’m honestly trying to continuously navigate my new job. Managing several projects, blog, gym, and just life. Getting a new routine down is my tester right now.

  14. Tomi C

This year I am really wanting to learn more about publishing. I have a couple of friends who have self published their books and I finally finished writing my book last year and I’m ready to publish. So, this year it’s all about making the right moves to get my words out there.

  15. Sarah Bailey

These are some great tips, I have to admit I just point and shoot and hope which I know as a blogger I really shouldn’t and I should learn to work with my camera more.

  16. candy

Always amazing what a great photo can do. Your right trade or intern but learning how to use great photography is important.

  17. Tiffany H

I love the whole look- shirt, boots and glasses. I need to start collaborating more with other people, so we can help each other out. I went to a Black Blogger meet up this Saturday, so that is a start. I want to learn so much this year, excited to start the process.

    • MimiCuteLips

That is a great start Tiffany. For you maybe photography isn’t the thing, but collaborating is the way to go. Don’t know need someone who is already a major star. Both of you working on your shine together and become stars.

  18. Anosa

I can’t believe you DIY’d that shirt it looks so good I love it, I am hoping to learn how to use my camera this year too.

  19. Sara Welch

Girl you look so good! This year I am learning a new instrument!

  20. Kita Bryant

  22. Joanna @ Everyday Made Fresh

I love my Rebel! It seems the more I use it, the more I learn. Shooting in manual is the way to go!

  23. valmg @ Mom Knows It All

Enjoy getting to know your new camera! I love taking photos, it can be a lot of fun. I took a class at the college but in the end almost always prefer unstaged shots over others.

  24. Sarah Honey

All your shots came out amazing! Love how you both teamed up to learn together and take pictures of each other. It’s such a great idea!

  25. Our Family World

Great article! I have always wanted to learn photography, but have never gotten the chance to take lessons for it. For the past 22 days of this year, I have learned to choose food that are good for diabetics like me. My blood sugar level went out of whack again because of all the holiday indulgence. I am slowly but surely getting back on track.

  26. Chubskulit Rose

I love that picture of you sitting on the steps, your laugh is beautiful! I am trying to learn how to decorate my home.

  27. Angie

That is such a good camera! I have the T3i, and I can’t justify upgrading yet (financially) but I’d get that one if I was going to. Canons are just soooo good.

  28. stephanie parrell

Love the looks you gave here! you rock those bad ass glasses. Inspiring 🙂

  29. Sandy N Vyjay

The photos are stunning and the attitude rocks. Would love to focus on improving photography skills in 2018.

  30. Fatima Torres

That’s so sweet that your babe invested in a camera for you. Best wishes learning all the techniques.
