Is What They Say True About Sibling Order?

Hey Cuties,

Today I’ve come with the great debate, the great sibling debate. Actually, there is no real debate because I will hear of nothing else. Okay, that isn’t true because I want to know where and how you weigh in on this topic. However, I said what I said.

Based on the above paragraph I feel like you should already know where I stand. I am a very typical little sister and I’m so freaking proud of it.

I am one of two girls and my sister is 6.5 years older than me. Now I don’t believe everyone perfectly falls into the categories below but they may. For me, I am not far off from what they say and I am very proud of who I am.

My sister and I are almost night and day in personality. I am loud, I am the life of the party, I am a rebel and always have been, I take the risk, I make my own rules. My hairstyles and overall style are very bold and in your face yet so true to me and my personality. I am unapologetically me. Although I am the youngest I am very much a leader and mother hen.

Here are some of the things they say.

Older (est) Sibling:

They are the center of attention – They have like 500 childhood pictures

They are pressured to be the best.

Most of the time, they are the favorite. – Not up for debate on this one.

They don’t generally take risk and play it safe.

They are like the second parent, they also take care of the family. – You learn to cook early.

Because they are the first they are eager to please and don’t want to fail.

Middle Sibling:

Keep to themselves – They don’t always buddy up with another sibling.

Feel left out or forgotten. – We’ve seen this play out in a variety of TV shows and movies.

They keep the peace and are usually the mediators.

Great listeners  – maybe because they struggle to be heard

People pleasers – They want to be liked.

They value their outside friends – They make for the best, best friend you can have.

A bit secretive – I think this goes back to keeping to themselves. Not like dead bodies in the basement.

They feel replaceable – You might not miss them if they went missing.

Have the most to prove – Showing is much better than telling.

Younger (est) Sibling:

Spoiled –  It is not our fault our parents have more money and resources to spend.

More playful – We want to be the show pony.

Brat – Because we are fighting for attention because it is focused on the oldest.

Great sense of humor  – It is because we are so well rounded. Most

Risks takers – Because we are tired of someone always telling us what to do. We are going to show you.

Confident – Everyone in the family, older siblings included keep tell us how important we are.

Creative – Because we need to outdone whatever our older siblings have already done.

Dethrone the first-born – self-explanatory

They want respect – We hate that everyone thinks they know what is best. We just want to be an individual. All those hand me downs didn’t help.

Charmers – We can woo a snake.

Thrill seekers – Well, adventure is out there.

I would say all three are bang-on. I have two sisters, and I’m the eldest. The eldest child description is me to a tee, my middle sister is a full-blown hippie/scenester/free-spirit, and my youngest sister is SPOILED. LOL! Both great people and I love them to death!

  2. Leslie

I’m oldest on both sides of family. The graphic is interesting especially for only child which I have.

  3. Jay Colby

This is certainly an interesting concept and some of the sibling attributions are true in some cases. With me being the youngest sibling in my family I can see a lot of those attributes in my brother and sister.

  4. Kim

I am the “baby” of my three sisters. A lot of what you said is true. I am not, however, a risk taker or thrill seeker. I am 100% a rebel lol

  5. Michelle Thames

Wow, I’m the youngest, I am not a brat but I sure am creative lol! I’m not a risk taker either. My siblings kind of do fit with this though. LOL! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Monique Tillman

I’m the only child on my mom side and the oldest on my dad side. I get the best of both worlds. Im overly independent, leader, and creative. I have an hell of imagination, lol.

  7. Kita

I am an only child and those traits are accurate. Now for my kids, my youngest is the leader and asked more like the older sibling/second parent.

  8. Dellea

I’ve never seen breakdown of sibling behavior before, but this all makes sense. I am an only child and I can say those traits definitely fit! I also grew up with a daycare in my home, so I also have all of the traits of a first born as well!

  9. Kiwi

Im totally the middle child. I am super creative and an instant peacemaker and I did often feel leftout!

  10. robin rue

I don’t know, but I am the oldest and definitely a leader. My sister DEFINITELY has a severe case of middle child syndrome. She always has and always will.

  11. Alli Smith

I’m the middle child and I totally agree with everything you’ve said! When I look at my own children, it’s pretty much the same way. I kinda feel bad that my oldest has a ton of baby photos and my youngest only has a few. The oldest always tried to convince her that she was adopted.

  12. valmg @ Mom Knows It All

I am the oldest of four. I don’t necessarily agree with everything you’ve listed, but for some things like helping care for siblings it’s true. It was necessary in our house as my Mom was alone.

  13. Amber Myers

This is interesting. I’m an Only Child so I checked out that list. Some of it was true, but not all. I am not a perfectionist by any means. I do my best and if it works out, great, if not, eh.

  14. EG III

Well looks like we have something in common be the youngest. I don’t necessarily believe in all the standards based on order though because I’ve always sort of been somewhat of the “little” big brother.

  15. Franc Ramon

Older sibling can really be more of a leader and be protective especially when there is a huge age gap. Younger ones tend to be the center of attention and is a total opposite of the eldest.

  16. candy

There are eight of us so this sibling pecking order I don’t believe works for us. Maybe because there are so many of us.

    • MimiCuteLips

That is a lot Candy, I agree this probably doesn’t fit so well when you have more than 4 kids. Your home must have been a lot of fun though.

  17. Kelly Reci

I definitely see a lot of these attributes with my cousins. There are exactly three of them so it’s easy to point out the oldest, middle, and youngest (versus a family of four, let’s say). The youngest one can definitely get self-centered!

  18. Courtney CJ

Lol, so whenever I see this topic I laugh because my life is SO complicated. I am my adoptive mom’s only child. My birthmother’s oldest and my birthfather’s youngest. I don’t think I act like the younger sibling but I see qualities of both only child and the oldest in me.

    • MimiCuteLips

That is an interesting dynamic. I am my mother’s youngest and my father’s oldest. Only I didn’t grow up with my siblings on my father’s side so I don’t have a dynamic to really speak on.

  19. Our Family World

I am the first born child but I think I am a mix of the characteristics of all birth orders. Some of the characteristics of the first-born/eldest child are on point, except the one about being controlling.

  20. Toiia L. Rukuni

I believe that birth order plays a crucial role in life. I am number 6 out of seven children in my family. At one point I lived like an only child, and suddenly my baby sister arrived in the world. I think that I am night and day from most of my siblings since according to this chart I would be considered the youngest, and it is pretty spot on from my childhood until today!

  21. Sarah Honey

This is so interesting. I think some of the traits ring true and others not so much. My oldest brother is super shy and fits more of the traits of the middle child.

  22. Terri Steffes

My sister and I fit the profiles to a T. She is the fun loving, easy and laid back one, while I have the mostly type A personality! I love reading about sibling order.

  23. Tiffany H.

Yes I am the oldest child and this pretty much sums up except for I’m the risk taker. I think the rest of my siblings are less risk takers then me. Its funny it says the favorite, my little sister swears im the favorite but I think mom favors both of us equally. Def a leader, bossy and extremely motivated.

  24. Jenn @ EngineerMommy

I am an only child. I am definitely very independent and very comfortable being alone. My friend, who is one of three, is very uncomfortable being alone.

    • MimiCuteLips

She is so used to having sibling around I totally get both sides.

I had to learn to be comfortable on my own. Everyone always takes care of “the baby”.

  25. Farida

I agree with all the adjectives for the first born. I also have a good relationship with my second sibling but not so pleasant with the last.

  26. Carol Cassara

Although some of these are somewhat true, there are also characteristics that siblings have that’s expected from another sibling. But it’s fun to figure out which one you are and if it’s accurate!

  27. Sandy N Vyjay

I do think that much of what we hear about sibling rivalry is a myth. Though it may be true in some cases not in all cases. I have see this more manifested when the age difference between two siblings is less, say about 2 or 3 years.

    • MimiCuteLips

I agree, my sister and I are so far apart that we didn’t have as much time together in our home. She went to college while I was still in Elementary school.

  28. Farrah Less

I love and miss my sister she is my best friend. Growing up together thought me a lot of things. I could’nt have a better sister than her.

  29. Saidah Washington

Those colors looks absolutely amazing!! I love lipstick so those are colors I am going to need to try.

  30. Kita Bryant

I only have one sibling. Growing up was easy for us compared to larger households.

  31. Chelsea

I am an only child and definitely sensitive! I feel like I have first born characteristics too.

  32. Silvia

I’m the oldest and can definitely see so many of these traits in me! My youngest sister is 15 years apart so she is kind of like an only child and definitely shows those characteristics.

  33. Claudia Krusch

I’m the oldest of three. I don’t really agree with all the items on your list, but I can’t see myself in some of them!
