The Upside Film Review

Hey Cuties,

Wednesday night my crew and the 30+ persons I invited to an advanced screening of The Upside had an epic night. The theater was packed! Shoutout to everyone who came out, some I got to see and chat with and others I did not. Either way, I appreciate you. This movie is legit Kevin Hart’s best work. I’ve seen almost all of his movies.

Naturally, I knew nothing about The Upside until I watched the trailer. Did you know this movie was based on a true story? Let me share my research with you… The Upside is based on the hit 2011 French film The Intouchables. The Intouchables found its inspiration in a true story, that of Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and Abdel Sellou, originally from Algeria.

Abdel Sellou (R) and Philippe Pozzo di Borgo pose for a picture in the backstage area in the Columbiahalle arts and concert venue in Berlin, on December 3, 2012. The recent popular French film ‘Almost best Friends’ is based on the life-story and book of Sellou and di Borgo. Both held the reading session for the first time in Germany on the occasion of the ‘UN International Day for People with Disabilities’. The Upside in theatres TODAY!
This is not your typical Kevin Hart movie, and that is the absolute best part.

About the Movie: A comedic look at the relationship between a wealthy man with quadriplegia and an unemployed man with a criminal record who’s hired to help him.

Bryan Cranston’s plays Phillip and Kevin Hart plays Dell. Nicole Kidman plays Yvonne and she made me laugh for all the wrong reasons. I imagine her to really act like this character in her everyday life.  That made me laugh even more.

The Upside Film Review

The true stuff you see in the movie: There are several more truths, but they are telling the story so I won’t say.

Kevin Hart’s character was really an ex-convict.

Bryan Cranston’s character really is a quadriplegic. The movie tells you how he became a quadriplegic and that is true to his real life. [I don’t want to spoil it]

Kevin Hart’s character is named Dell, the real person is named Abdel.

My thoughts:

This is Kevin Hart’s best work, you see so much of his acting abilities that you have never seen in his other movies. This movie proves he is more than the one-dimensional character we have come to know and love. You will laugh a lot, the movie is hilarious. It addresses real issues, but in a way that you don’t pity anyone if that makes sense. It is a feel-good movie if you take nothing away know that life never stops. Even when the greatest tragedies take place you can still find joy. It doesn’t mean it isn’t tough, but there is no reason to allow it to destroy you. Keep going, life is still available to you. I will see the movie again, it was that good.

Shoutout to my squad, they showed up honey.  I saw new faces and old faces and it was nice to hug them and chit chat after the movie. They all loved it by the way. Then I took a picture with my favorites. Yes, LittleCuteLips saw the movie too and she enjoyed it. She turns 7 tomorrow, so some of the jokes went over her head but she knew what was going on. The movie is PG 13 so it is family friendly, the movie has great lessons for all ages.

As much as I love Kevin Hart, I usually skip his movies, but I really want to see this one. It looks like one I watched on Netflix about a flaky would-be college student helping someone with a permanent disability.

  2. T. Espinoza

It really was a great movie. I was super impressed by Kevin Hart and I definitely felt ALL the feels LOL. I’d definitely see it again.

  3. Kendro

I’ve seen a few previews for this movie and it looks really good! That’s so cool you and your group had a good time watching it. I can’t wait to see it myself.

  4. Leslie H

Saw the preview and it looked interesting. Thanks for the review so now I will check it out. Kevin Hart is not my favorite but this looks like a role usually not his type so that is what I want to see!!

  5. Lia World Traveler

Looks like a real family affair and we would love to see this movie and unrelated I love the turban and adding them to the repertoire of wraps as I grow my hair out as well.

      – It was a real family affair, I love that they all came out for.
      – I have fallen in love with this turban, I need to get other colors. Growing out a haircut is tough for me.

So excited to see this. I knew Kevin Hart could be versatile. Didn’t know this was based on a true story. Amazing!

  7. Holly

His best work? Gotta check this out for sure. Sounds like you really enjoyed it.

  8. Tiffany Heard

I heard him on the radio, talking about his role in the movie. He said that he wanted to show a different side of him and said it is one of his best roles. Seems like a great movie and something I would be interested in watching. Glad you have a support team.

    • MimiCuteLips

Yes! Everything he said is correct. I was shocked watching, I almost forgot who he was while watching. You get so into the story and it is so different for him.

  9. Elle

I’m so glad to hear that Kevin Hart has truly evolved as a person and an actor. This is my first time hearing about The Upside, but I will be watching once it is released for sure.

I am so looking forward to this movie and hope to see it this week.

I am happy to see Kevin doing something that I can actually watch because I can’t stomach most of his non stand up movies.

  12. Nadalie Bardo

I have such mixed emotions about this film. On the one hand, I want to see it, but on the other, The Intouchables (the French version) is one of my favourite films of all time. Decisions, decisions!

  13. Katherine G

This looks like a great movie. I am looking forward to seeing Kevin Hart in a serious role. I am a fan of his and Bryan Crantson’s. I think the two of them working together is great. I can’t wait until I get a chance to see this movie.
