Hey Cuties,
Happy National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. I hope you are wearing your ugliest of sweaters while you read this post. If not I hope you stopped by so I can help you make one. I featured this on my Good Morning Washington segment this morning and it was a hit. Ha! Out of all the Ugly Sweaters I’ve made, this one is my absolute favorite. It is the most absurdly creative and funny. This is guaranteed to win the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, you know if you go to one and they have a contest. Should you do that make sure you tell them MimiCuteLips taught you.
I had a blast on Good Morning Washington segment for National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.
Supplies: Sweatshirt, Sharpie, felt, stockings and garland.
I went for a red sweatshirt because it is brick-like. I drew lines across the sweatshirt using a pencil and a ruler.
After I had my pencil lines I traced over them with a Sharpie.
After I traced the horizontal lines I had to add the vertical lines to make it look like real bricks.
I found some super cute monogrammed mini stockings from Michael’s. They had six out of the eight letters I needed. After checking three other Michael’s I quit looking for them and returned the ones I’d purchased.
Dollar Tree for the win because these are plain so I could write on them and they were 2 for $1.00.
Being true to my personality you know I had to have my sweater branded out. That is right my stockings says CUTE LIPS. Duh, your mantle has stockings and so will mine.
Cute Lips worked out perfectly because each word is short and both are only four letters. In order to get your spacing perfect, you need to put the sweatshirt on. I had Babe help me eyeball the spacing and then he secured each stocking with a safety pin.
I did the same thing with the other side.
Putting the garland on was the trickiest part of making this project. I decided to loop some thread into the sleeve, place the garland between it and then tie the thread over it a few times to make it secure.
I stitched the stockings to the sleeve and removed the safety pins. I cut the garland and put it on, it was easier to manage this way. I went over my letters with a thicker Sharpie so they stand out more.
Now that my sleeves are done I need to add the fireplace as a finishing touch. I cut out a square piece of black felt and glued it to the shirt. Then I added a red, orange and yellow layer of fire to it and glued that down.
It is all done and I love the way it turned out. The materials cost a little under $15 to make. You know I believe in creative control so your mantle may look a bit different and that is okay. After writing this I thought about putting pictures hanging off the mantle. That would totally be cute.
Cost: Sweatshirt $4.50 – Stockings $4.00 – Felt $0.75 – Garland $3

Me too, the craze is still going strong.

This is the best Christmas sweater ever! Putting stockings on the sleeves was pure genius. I have to make one of these for every member of my family!
Hahahahaha, that would be a great family picture.

It much easier than you think.
I laughed so hard at this. It’s seriously adorable and an amazing idea for sure.
Hahahaha, we had so much fun doing this segment.
This is easily the best ugly sweater I have ever seen, and super cost effective! I hate seeing ugly sweaters for $50+ (no joking) that are truly hideous, because more likely than not, someone else is going to have it too – and we’ll both have gotten got. Great job!
I want to thank the Academy and Michael’s. Michael’s forces me to explore my deepest creativity and entices me with coupons.
OH my gosh! Ugly sweaters are going wild! I am definitely going to make one!
They really are.
Oh my gosh! That sweater is so fun! I love that you can make it yourself without spending a ton of money. Perfect for ugly sweater parties.

Me too, this is the best thus far. I have no idea how I will top this one.
This is too cute and perfect for you. My daughter is making a sweater this week. Showed her your segment for inspiration.
Nice, thanks Kita. Post a picture of hers when she is done.
Oh that’s not ugly at all, in my opinion. 🙂 I think it’s creative and really unique, one that will certainly catch the attention of most people in the mall.
I try to make them ugly but the creativity takes over.
You had everybody beat with this one Mimi. Yes, that is one ugly sweater. LOL!
Ha! Thanks, Ola.
This was the BEST! I feel like this should have won a monetary prize or something – very creative!
Right! Me too. lol
Lol that would win any Ugly Sweater contest. I love how much fun everyone has with this craze. I’ve been working on one but yours has mine beat 100%.
The craze around the Ugly Sweaters really makes creating them even more fun.
This is the most creative sweater I’ve ever seen! You should really win an award! You go girl!
Right, I totally should. I wish girl, I didn’t even have a party to attend.
This is such a great idea. Very creative. I will add this to my craft list for next year.
Thanks, Ramona.
