One of my New Year's resolutions was to get out, well a sista has been doing just that. I kicked last Friday off with the Blogger Week Networking Mixer. The event took place in Washington, DC. Blogger Week™ 2014 is a multicultural festival of bloggers, journalists and social media mavens hosted by Black Bloggers Connect I arrived and to my surprise my cousin was also there. hahaha Had no idea. We went in and mixed and mingled. I met some virtual friends in person for the first time and made some new friends. I went in with no expectations but I was pleasantly surprise that everyone was social. They were friendly and they had no issues sparking up some chatter with a stranger. LOVE THAT! Perhaps it's the blogger in us all.
HAPPY BLOG-VERSARY/BLOGGY BIRTHDAY TO ME!
*tosses confetti* Life and Lips turns 4 years old 2/25/2014.When I started this blog I had no vision in mind, shoot I still don't honestly. I just knew I wanted a place to be Mi. To talk about what I wanted to talk about, to share what I wanted to share and make it look pretty. Well I've accomplished that! I didn't have many followers, didn't know how I would get followers and didn't worry about it honestly. I just knew I was going to post even if I was the only one reading. Some days I still feel like I might be the only one reading. hahahaha
At the start of the year my boyfriend named this year #Xtreme13. When he said it his thinking was a year for us to do things outside of our box, outside of our comfort zone and explore some unknown things. While we set out to do just that this year we didn’t know just how #Xtreme this year would be. We experienced a lot of death this year – His Grandmother (February), 3 of his boys (2 of them died together and the other just two days later - May), my Aunt (age 52 - July), and a few High School classmates.
Sunday, October 27, 2013 arrived; the alarm clock went off at 4AM. We weren’t ready so we hit snooze until it was 4:15AM. The alarm clock went off again and this time IT WAS SHOW TIME!!! Today was the day my Babe was going to run his very first marathon. Now for those of you in the cheap seats (I am a former member) a marathon is a set distance; the exact distance of 26.2 miles. DAMN THAT’S A LOT. We (shut up so what no I wasn’t running too) have been building up to this moment for a long time. He registered back in March and had been training ever since. During his training he never ran more than 13 miles. However he would frequently run from our home to our sons Martial Arts Studio which is about 6.5 miles from the house. It became a game for family and friends to randomly spot him running around town. Hahahahaha I even got a couple of messages from my Facebook friends who had no idea he was training but would say they thought they saw him (insert a random place/street) running. Each time I would reply and say “Yup, that was him”. Lol
#Xtreme13 is still going on, we can't quit now we still have a few months left in the year. This is the Race addition, some wet, some muddy, some just running but all of them a lot of fun. First up is the Roc Race: This race was supposed to be Wipe Out Style, it was advertised to be big fun. They had a great idea, but they failed to execute it properly. This was their first year out the gate and well, they didn't have many obstacles. My Babe did this Race with two of his motorcycle friends. Nori and I came along to cheer them on and take pictures. This was a 5K of fun so they say.
Nori is helping Da-Da stretch before the race
It is that time of year, the time that we honor our Mothers, Grandmother's, God Mother's and Mother figures. It is MOTHER'S DAY! It is my annual tradition to host a Tea Party. Last Year's Tea was a blast, while it was my first it turned out rather nicely. This year I had even more ideas on how to improve upon my tea party. There were a few things I wanted to incorporate this year but I had a lot going (I was taking swimming lesson) on and I didn't get to all the tiny details. All of my guest enjoyed the set up and had a really good time. I can't wait to make it even better next year.
Three Mother's Days in a row I have attended a tea with my mother and sister. Over those years I got the tea party itch and wanted to host a tea of my own. In 2006 I purchased my own tea set and let me tell you it is a beauty. The theme of my set is butterflies, but they are so tiny I won't actually use them. From then I began to shop around for all of the perfect accessories to coordinate nicely with my set. As luck would have it I found the perfect bowl and plate from Target. I found other random accessories from Home Goods, Michael's and any other spots that had something butterfly-esque. Well five years later my time came and LADIES & GENTLEMEN I hosted my very first tea. For those that know me know I'm a lover of all things creative, crafts and planning. So I decided I would host a Post Mother's Day brunch since I was out of town on Mother's Day. I assembled my guest list, confirmed their availability and sent out my invitations. So I sent out five invitations, each a different color, each with a different butterfly. Here I captured each butterfly so you can see how they looked. I put in one full copy so you can visualize how each were styled different but looked the same.
