A History Of Funny Was Made At The LOL Comedy Honors
Some of your comedy favorites old and new converged at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem, New York. They came out to honor and celebrate one another at the inaugural LOL Comedy Honors. This is the first award show geared to the comedy. That’s crazy, right?
Think about all of the comedy greats of the past. The Richard Pryor, Red Fox, Bernie Mac and others that were never honored for their comedic chops. The event took place a few short blocks from the legendary Apollo Theater, at the Alhambra Ball Room, it was so fitting. I covered the red carpet and had a ball. I’ve never laughed so much. Comedians are always on and they don’t disappoint.
Comedian Cocoa Brown was in the building, you may also know her as Jennifer in the sitcom Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse.
I was so excited to meet Marsha Warfield, I loved Night Court back in the day. She was the 2017 Comedy Queen Pioneer Honoree. She is so deserving, she was my favorite of the night.
Adele Givens was another favorite, plus her Bantu-knot-out was so freaking magical. Like seriously. She is a comedian who is also an actor, my favorite movie with her is The Players Club, she was Tricks she was a tripper pair with Ronnie. They had a special tribute to the Queens of Comedy which also includes Adele, Mo’Nique, Sommore and Laura Hayes.
The former Mrs. Bernie Mac (Rhonda McCullough) hit the carpet. They gave out an award in her deceased husbands honor; “Bernie Mac Comedy King of the Year Honoree.” It was a pleasure meeting and chatting with her.
Paul Mooney is legendary and I’m just thrilled to be in his company. We took a selfie but it was so blurry I won’t share it. Paul is a writer, social critic, actor and he was a writer for comedian Richard Pryor. You may have recognized him from Chappelle’s Show. Paul was the honoree for The Honor for Creative Excellence.
Funny brothers Joe and Guy Torry hit the carpet full of shenanigans. It is hard to keep comedians from being funny. Joe Torry was the honoree of the Robin Harris Legend Honor.
Comedian Bill Bellamy was in full on funny man mode on the red carpet. He chatted with the media and exchanged silly behaviors with his fellow comedians. Bill was my favorite character to hate in the movie classic Love Jones. Bill was the host for the night.
Comedian Lunelle was on the carpet in all of her gold glory. They there a lot of funny packed into her short stature. Luenell has been in the game for a long time, she was been featured in “Think Like A Man”, “Hotel Transylvania” with Adam Sandler, “Taken 2” with Liam Neeson and more. You can find her on the tube as well. Luenell was the honoree for the Moms Mabley Legacy Honor.
I was looking forward to seeing comedian Lil Rel, he is having the best year ever. He was in the box office hit Get Out, featured in a few episodes of Insecure and most recently featured in Jay-Z’s short video Moonlight as Joey. Lil Rel was the honoree of the Bernie Mac Comedy King of the Year Honoree.
You’ve probably seen Jasmin Brown and her hilarious viral videos on your favorite social media channel at @watchjazzy. Funny guy, Tristen Winger has been on Issa Rae’s HBO’s hit show Insecure as Thug Yoda. Both of these young talents are on 50 Cents news comedy sketch show 50 Central. Think 2017 In Living Color.
Comedian Vena E aka @yesimprettyvee can also be seen on your favorite social media website. Notoriously wearing her hot pink robe Ms. Vena is bringing you the laughs.
Comedian Juhahn Jones is another social media star that is blazing a path in comedy. He is having a good year as well, he was the honoree of the Social Media Comic Influencer of the Year Honor.
Comedian D.L. Hughley is known for a lot of things, but to the old heads, he is known from his hit show The Hugleys. Lately, D.L. has been making waves as a political commentator. A veteran in the game for sure. He was the honoree of the Voice of a Generation Honor. This award is so appropriate.
The award show was all inclusive, I met some of the dopest comedy legends in the game. I also chatted with the up and coming comedians using social media to promote themselves with the likes of getting real TikTok followers to help increased awareness of their talents. Some comedians often praised the support they got from social media and cited it as a morale booster as well as a great way to market themselves. Social media has changed the game and it’s a new platform to showcase your talent for sure. It is nice to see all facets of comedy embraced. And a shoutout to Babe, he was my wing man for the night and helped me capture the Lol Comedy Honors red carpet.

Looks like you had a blast. Is that Luenell (?) I see in that one pic? She’s hilarious. Lil’ Rel is funny too. Hate that I won’t see him The Carmichael Show anymore but I hope he returns to tv soon.
Yup, that was Luenell. Maybe someone will pick up the Carmichael show and put it on a new network.

Thanks, Jilly. Oh wow, was a great memory of Bernice Mac to have.
I love comedy, I try to go to comedy shows as much as I can (from well known to the newbies trying to make it!) You’re very lucky to have had such an opportunity like this… how fun!
That is cool Eloise. I need to get out to more. I’ve only been to two in my life.
That sounds like an awesome event! I’ve only been to a few live comedy shows, but they were so much fun to watch. Looks like an amazing roster of talent!
Nikki, it was one of the best line ups.
Oh my goodness this looked like a great night! I think Lil Rel is hilarious. I loved seeing him in Insecure, hoping that him and Molly would start a long distance relationship lol. My fav’s of the night would have been him and D.L. Hughley.
He is making quick work of this comedy game. I look forward to following his journey. D.L. is so old school, he looks good.
This looks like so much fun! I think I would’ve died with all the comic there because everyone is so funny!
My stomach was hurting for sure after this one.
I always like a good hearty laugh and I am glad that these people who work hard to entertain us was given the accolade they deserve.
