Natural Hairstyles for Kids. Vol. II
Hey Cuties,
Today we’re talking hair; in particular, we’re talking hairstyles. Last year I wrote a post titled Natural Hairstyles for Kids, to date, it is my most popular blog post ever. We are less than a month out from the first day of school so I thought it was a good time to roll out a part II of that post. I know that parents will be taking their kids to the hairdressers before school starts again, so it’s good to have some inspiration for hairstyles to tell the salon what you’re looking for. This way, professionals like Kid’s Castle Cuts in Portland will be able to execute perfectly the style and cut you’re looking for. This time I’ve included a bonus wash day hack that will ease the hair washing process.
Natural Hairstyles for Kids Part I & Natural Hair Routine
Not much has changed from last year, wash day is still generally Sunday. We’ve been slacking a bit during the summer but we are about to get back to our regularly scheduled program. There is zero time to do hair in the morning so a weekly style is what works best for us.
If you still have a little one like me wash day can be exhausting for you, hard on the back, and frustrating for you and your child. Using a pool noodle as a neck support can change all of that. I cut ours into pieces so I can get all of the bang for my buck. Someone shared this with me and I’m passing it on to you.
This was an easy one to do. You section off areas, put a rubber band around them, and connect them all the way up. You can leave the top loose in a puffball or secure it in a chignon as I did. This was for a birthday party.
After washing and blowing out her hair I braid it up or twist it up for the week. I try to change things up as much as I can. Two strand twists are much easier to take out so I like to use them instead of braiding to the ends all of the time.
Sometimes she requests a particular style or she will show demonstrate what she wants on her hair. Now that she is a bit older I incorporate some of her style ideas.
My daughter is a fan of having her hair all to one side. So I try to come up with styles that will allow for that.
Other times she will request to have it off of her face. With her hair growing so much it gets in the way sometimes. I don’t want ketchup on her twist or braids, that totally happens.
Back to the side, we go, I almost always put beads on the ends. I secure them with a rubber-band; when I don’t put anything on the ends they bend into crazy positions while she is sleeping.
When I want something quick I try to go for an up-do. This hairstyle isn’t stocking cap-friendly though.
Girls just want to have fun; nothing says fun like a high ponytail.
This is one of those days when she didn’t want any hair in her face.
This is an old school hairstyle, but it is very quick. It usually takes me about 2 hours to braid her hair up most of the time.
This style is pretty quick as well.
This is one of my favorite styles on her. My part game is killer.
This is another quick and easy style to show off your part game. I mix in individual box braids on the side to make it look full.
I call this one “special occasion hair” this isn’t the hair she generally wears during the week. She wore this look for her 4th birthday, she requested “Annie Hair”. That means she wants her hair to look like the Annie {the black version} from the movie. Her natural texture isn’t the same as “Annie’s” so I put in a bunch of big box braids and then take them out in the morning. I brushed the front up into a top knot so it isn’t in her face. She had a Minnie Mouse birthday theme so we went with the Minnie Bow.
Note: Boxer braids are not a thing.

Nice! We did our special occasion hair yesterday.. then it rained. I am trying to figure out something to last all the way through next weekend that won’t be a nightmare to take out!
That is why I do two strand twist a lot. The take down is so easy.
How do you take down toddler two strand twist style without breaking the hair would i wet thr hair first before taking them down
Untwist them from the bottom up. You don’t have to wet them, it is likely easier to take them out if they are dry. Essentially you are just unraveling the twist in the opposite direction you twisted them in.
These are all too cute. I have three girls and hair days are painful. I’m always looking for cute styles that will last a week.
Eeeek! Three girls, I can’t even imagine. Cute styles that last a week are a must for sure.
These styles are all very cute for little girls. I have been brain storming for hair styles for my niece and this blog post is a perfect resource.
Oh yes Tia, this is right on time. Style away.
These styles are super cute so I will definitely sharing with my brothers who have little girls. I don’t have little people anymore.
Thanks Tanya, I’m looking forward to the day girl.
If only I knew how to braid! I have three kids with a head full of hair and I am struggling.
Oh Tata, we need to get you a braiding class. Are you in the DC area?
You ain’t lying; the struggle is real taking out braids so I tend to prefer twists as well. These are too cute. Loved the follow up post!
Right Kara, we have to work smart. Thanks a bunch.
These are super cute! I, too, do two-strand twists on the ends of my daughters’ hair. This is right on time as I’m getting ready to do their hair. Another wash-day hack I use is to do a “dry shampoo”. I either use Koils By Nature cleanser (a foam) or I mix apple cider vinegar with Eden Body Works’ tea tree shampoo in a spray bottle. I wash the girls’ hair in sections while it’s dry and while we can both sit down, and then wash it out 🙂
Oh yes Christine, I’m taking notes and giving this one a try. I also wash in sections so this is perfect. Thanks for sharing.
These hairstyles are so pretty! The top one I used to do on my daughter often when she was little. You are taking me down memory lane with a majority of these hairstyles. Love it!
Yes Katherine, I love it. I like little girls to just look like little girls.
I remember the days when I use to lay down on the kitchen counter to get my hair washed! I definitely need to give these styles to my mom for my little sister.
Essence so do I, it is like a rite of passage for little girls. Please share.
Her braid out too knot is too cute! I need a tutorial for that! Lol
It is so easy, her hair texture totally sells it. Mine is a bit different.
You do such a fantastic job! I love them all! You just gave me some ideas for back to school for my girls.
Thanks Valerie, I try to come up with some different looks but we both have our favorites.
I’m just learning to cornrow so I’ve been enjoying only doing my daughter’s hair once a week. Before our go to style was two puffs.
Nice Sonya, I’m sure you and your daughter are enjoying a lot of new hairstyles.
My not-so-little one is always at a loss because I don’t do this kind of stuff. Two-strands, yep! Braids? Umm, not so much. Poor thing, she’s on her own a LOT!
Aww Patranila, I know how she feels. My mother couldn’t braid either.
What adorable hairstyles!! I love the idea of using the pool noodle as a neck support when washing a child’s hair. I’ll have to remember this great tip.
Alli that is one of the best tips I’ve come across.
These are all super cute hairstyles. I love that you work with the fact that she likes to have all of her hair on one side.
Thanks Pam. I remember having favorite hairstyles as a kid.
Nice! It takes real talent to do hair in these styles. I watch one of the women in my hair salon so similar and I am amazed.
Jenn I taught myself when I was in middle school. Over time I just worked to get better.
These are such cute hairstyles for kids. I do similar ones with my kids. I love to twist and pin their hair into cute styles. I really just try to get all their hair off from their face, especially during the summer!
I love that Jenn. I totally agree, the summer months get uncomfortably hot.
All super cute! Great looking styles that are all very stylish too and suit her! I have a hard time with my girls hair all the time and it shouldn’t be so hard – I think its just me though!
Thanks Jeanine. I want to make sure she looks like a little girl at all times.
All of these hairstyles are so cute!! I can’t even handle a simple bread I can’t imagine being able to do this on their hair.
Thanks Vera, it took time and practice for sure.
These are some really cute natural hairstyles for kids. I really love the Twisted Up-do & Chignon on her and the awesome way it looks. Thanks for sharing these adorable hairstyles.
Thanks Rebecca, I love a chignon.
Wow, you did an amazing job. Your daughter is so cute!! I am hair challenged, but you make it look very easy!
Thanks Sara. It takes practice for sure.
Awww these are too cute!!! Lord, I wish my mom had different style for me growing up lol I swear all I had was the two pigtails. You did an awesome job on your daughter’s hair and I love you give her variety.
Dee, don’t feel bad I was the same way. Styling hair was not my mom’s ministry at all.
These are all super cute natural hairstyles for kids. She looks super happy in the photos, and the hairstyles are just beautiful!
Thanks Sarah. She loves getting her hair done. I’m so thankful because it makes the process easier.
These hairstyles are so pretty. I’m not very good when It comes to doing hairstyles on myself or my girls. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks Bonnie, I have a natural talent for it. My mom didn’t have any skills though so I had to teach myself early. lol
I love the bun! The braids with it are so cute – and I bet she loves that its out of her face!!
Thanks Kendall, I try to give her some dress up styles that are different than her weekly braids.
There’s not a single style in this article that I don’t just love! My granddaughter prefers to keep her hair short so we have very little wiggle room on style, but we do try! 🙂 Thank you for sharing these awesome styles!
Nothing wrong with short Susan. I could get back 4hrs out of my Sunday if we kept my daughters hair short.
Wow, those are pretty styl]es! You must have a lot of patience to do all these. I know my daughter won’t be able to stand me doing all these.
Rose I don’t have a choice. Once a week we sit down and I wash her hair, blow it out and style it up.
Love all the styles. I think the one with the bow is my fave. Nori is such a cutie!
Thanks Vashti. She is the perfect hair model. I love her texture.
I love all of them!!!!!
