Natural Hairstyles for Kids. Vol. II

Hey Cuties,

Today we’re talking hair; in particular we’re talking hairstyles. Last year I wrote a post titled Natural Hairstyles for Kids, to date it is my most popular blog post ever.  We are less than a month out from the first day of school so I thought it was a good time to roll out a part II of that post. This time I’ve included a bonus wash day hack that will ease the hair washing process.

Natural Hairstyles for Kids Part I & Natural Hair Routine

Part I

Not much has changed from last year, wash day is still generally Sunday. We’ve been slacking a bit during the summer but we are about to get back to our regularly scheduled program. There is zero time to do hair in the morning so a weekly style is what works best for us.

Wash Day Hack

If you still have a little one like me wash day can be exhausting for you, hard on the back and frustrating for you and your child. Using a pool noodle as a neck support can change all of that. I cut ours into pieces so I can get all of the bang for my buck. Someone shared this with me and I’m passing it on to you.

Twisted Up-do & Chignon

This was an easy one to do. You section off areas, put a rubber band around them and connect them all the way up. You can leave the top loose in a puff ball or secure it in a chignon like I did.  This was for a birthday party.

Cornrows & 2 Strand Twist

After washing and blowing out her hair I braid it up or twist it up for the week. I try to change things up as much as I can. Two strand twist are much easier to take out so I like to use them instead of braiding to the ends all of the time.

Sometimes she requests a particular style or she will show demonstrate what she wants on her hair. Now that she is a bit older I incorporate some of her style ideas.

Flat Twist & 2 Strand Twist

My daughter is a fan of having her hair all to one side. So I try to come up with styles that will allow for that.

Other times she will request to have it off of her face. With her hair growing so much it gets in the way sometimes. I don’t want ketchup on her twist or braids, that totally happens.

Cornrows & 2 Strand Twist

Back to the side we go, I almost always put beads on the ends. I secure them with a rubber-band; when I don’t put anything on the ends they bend into crazy positions while she is sleeping.

When I want something quick I try to go for an up-do. This hairstyle isn’t stocking cap friendly though.

Girls just want to have fun; nothing says fun like a high ponytail.

Cornrows & 2 Strand Twist

This is one of those days when she didn’t want any hair in her face.

Cornrows

This is an old school hairstyle, but it is very quick. It usually takes me about 2 hours to braid her hair up most of the time.

Cornrows & Box Braids

This style is pretty quick as well.

Cornrows

This is one of my favorite styles on her. My part game is killer.

Cornrows & Box Braids

This is another quick and easy style to show off your part game. I mix in individual box braids on the side to make it look full.

Braid Out & Top Knot

I call this one “special occasion hair” this isn’t the hair she generally wears during the week. She wore this look for her 4th birthday, she requested “Annie Hair”. That means she wants her hair to look like the Annie {the black version} from the movie. Her natural texture isn’t the same as “Annie’s” so I put in a bunch of big box braids and then take them out in the morning. I brushed the front up into a top knot so it isn’t in her face. She had a Minnie Mouse birthday theme so we went with the Minnie Bow.

Note: Boxer braids are not a thing.

Nice! We did our special occasion hair yesterday.. then it rained. I am trying to figure out something to last all the way through next weekend that won’t be a nightmare to take out!

These are all too cute. I have three girls and hair days are painful. I’m always looking for cute styles that will last a week.

  4. Tia | Pennies In My Pocket

These styles are all very cute for little girls. I have been brain storming for hair styles for my niece and this blog post is a perfect resource.

  5. Tanya

These styles are super cute so I will definitely sharing with my brothers who have little girls. I don’t have little people anymore.

  6. Tata

If only I knew how to braid! I have three kids with a head full of hair and I am struggling.

  7. Kara

You ain’t lying; the struggle is real taking out braids so I tend to prefer twists as well. These are too cute. Loved the follow up post!

  8. Christine @MomsNCharge

These are super cute! I, too, do two-strand twists on the ends of my daughters’ hair. This is right on time as I’m getting ready to do their hair. Another wash-day hack I use is to do a “dry shampoo”. I either use Koils By Nature cleanser (a foam) or I mix apple cider vinegar with Eden Body Works’ tea tree shampoo in a spray bottle. I wash the girls’ hair in sections while it’s dry and while we can both sit down, and then wash it out 🙂

    • MimiCuteLips

Oh yes Christine, I’m taking notes and giving this one a try. I also wash in sections so this is perfect. Thanks for sharing.

These hairstyles are so pretty! The top one I used to do on my daughter often when she was little. You are taking me down memory lane with a majority of these hairstyles. Love it!

  10. Essence Sylvia Smith

I remember the days when I use to lay down on the kitchen counter to get my hair washed! I definitely need to give these styles to my mom for my little sister.

  11. Tia @ financiallyfitandfab

Her braid out too knot is too cute! I need a tutorial for that! Lol

  12. Valerie robinson

You do such a fantastic job! I love them all! You just gave me some ideas for back to school for my girls.

  13. Sonya

I’m just learning to cornrow so I’ve been enjoying only doing my daughter’s hair once a week. Before our go to style was two puffs.

  14. Patranila

My not-so-little one is always at a loss because I don’t do this kind of stuff. Two-strands, yep! Braids? Umm, not so much. Poor thing, she’s on her own a LOT!

  15. Alli Smith

What adorable hairstyles!! I love the idea of using the pool noodle as a neck support when washing a child’s hair. I’ll have to remember this great tip.

  16. Pam

These are all super cute hairstyles. I love that you work with the fact that she likes to have all of her hair on one side.

  17. Jenn

Nice! It takes real talent to do hair in these styles. I watch one of the women in my hair salon so similar and I am amazed.

  18. Jenn @ EngineerMommy

These are such cute hairstyles for kids. I do similar ones with my kids. I love to twist and pin their hair into cute styles. I really just try to get all their hair off from their face, especially during the summer!

All super cute! Great looking styles that are all very stylish too and suit her! I have a hard time with my girls hair all the time and it shouldn’t be so hard – I think its just me though!

  26. Kendall

I love the bun! The braids with it are so cute – and I bet she loves that its out of her face!!
