Natural Hairstyles for Kids

Hey Cuties,

Today I wanted to share some great natural hairstyles for kids. It’s been a year since I posted about my daughters hair regime, you can read it HERE. The short story is cradle cap took most of her hair out and I’ve been growing it back. I wash her hair weekly and put it in a protective style for the week. Once the weekend hits I take her hair down and let her wear puff balls/ponytails to let it breathe.  Below are some of the styles I’ve done on her hair.  These styles can be done on a variety of textures and lengths of hair so don’t be afraid to try them out if you like them.

I learned to braid when I was a child so that comes easy for me. If you don’t know how to cornrow I suggest trying out the two strand twist hairstyles.  I’ve included a tutorial on how to flat twist at the bottom.

Dirty Hair = Took down her old hairstyle. Washed Hair = Washed and towel dried. Blown Hair = Blown out with a blow dryer. Braided Hair = Box braids + beads

This is how I learned to flat twist.

Those are all really cute hair styles. She looks super cute in all of them. Thanks for the great ideas.

  2. LaShawn

She is such a cutie! That being said: THAT IS A LOT OF HAIR! You did good getting her hair back! But see, this is why God blessed me with a boy! LOL

  3. Chubskulit Rose

Wow, that’s a lot of hair style and all of it looks good your pretty little darling’s hair! She could be a model!

  4. Christy Maurer

She is just too cute! I am glad her cradle cap issue is over! I remember my baby sister having it and my daughter had it too! I probably did too lol. These styles are so cute. I love the puff ball with the scarf 🙂

  5. R U S S

I am jealous. Doing all sorts of hairstyles is one of my frustrations. Im stuck with the ponytail. And you did an awesome job with all these hairstyles. It’s actually fun to be able to do these hairstyles with little girls. It keeps the hair neat and I think they enjoy it.

  6. Cherri Megasko

Oh my goodness! I love all of these and she is adorable to boot. What a great mom you are for spending so much time to make your daughter look and feel beautiful. My mom cut my hair in a pixie until I was old enough to take care of it myself because she didn’t ever want to mess with it.

  7. Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle

You did such an amazing job on her hair! I love those pig tails! They’re so cute!

  8. Emma

She is adorable! Her hair looks perfect on her. I must say, you have some serious talent in doing all those dos! Though my favorite is the Washed hair + Blown out = Puff Ball (she is like a little lady in that), I am amazed with how you can braid her hair like that. I don’t have the patience 😀 . Amazing job momma!

  9. Sandy KS

I love seeing the different hairstyles for children. I use to do my daughters hair in different hairstyles when she was younger. She is a teen and loves doing her own hair.

    • MimiCuteLips

Thanks Sandy, I bet she loved them. I can’t imagine my little one doing her own hair yet. I started doing my own very early on.

  10. Patrice

Wow, beautiful design hairstyles love the different children looks. Which I could braid hair it take a lot of skill especially doing kids hair.

  11. April @ Everyday Fitness and Nutrition

She is so cute and looks adorable in every hair style! You must spend a ton of time fixing her hair!

  12. Kiwi

Look at all those beautiful natural hairstyles for the kiddies! I wish being a natural kid was as prominent as it is today…we just had twist and plaits with barretts as options.

  13. Kita

I needed that video because me and this little girl…it takes 3 hours to do her hair from washing, conditioning, blow drying and then flat ironing because I don’t know what else to do. She is natural but on school mornings I don’t have time to comb through her hair and I don’t know how to braid or twist smh. I should be practicing this summer so I can know something when she starts school

  14. Alli

These are all adorable. When my girls were little, I loved to French Braid their hair. They sure didn’t have as many options as your little model does. She’s adorable!

  15. Liz Mays

These are all such cute styles. I love how you use the bows and scarves! I miss styling my daughter’s hair!

    • MimiCuteLips

Thanks Liz, I have to do it while I can. She will grow up before I know it and no longer want Mommy to do her hair.

  16. Nadeen

I love the cornrows and the big puffs! All so cute! She is the perfect model lol

    • MimiCuteLips

Thanks Nadeen, I love that she takes pride in getting her hair done. She will say if she wants her hair up or down and with or without beads.

  17. Laura

These are all cute natural hairstyles. I will try some of these styles on a little one (my cousin), if they can sit still! 🙂 This is great inspiration!

  18. Amber

First, she’s ADORABLE! So, so cute!

I taught myself how to braid and flat twist. It’s one of my biggest accomplishments as a mommy! I’m better at twisitng however, so that’s what I stick to. Love your creativity in the styles!

    • MimiCuteLips

Thanks Amber, that is awesome. I wold agree those are big accomplishments for sure. I need to work on my flat twisting.

  19. Chantal

I love the braid out in the puff balls! She is so cute and clearly very fashionable!

  20. Maria

What a sweetie! Cute hair style ideas.

  21. Felice Raina

I love that you blogged about this ♥ My mom would do all these hair styles on me when i was younger. Aww your daughter is the cutest and her hair is growing so beautifully.

  22. ClaudetteJ. Davis

Here facial expressions are as varied as her hair styles.

  23. Michelle V.

Such a cutie patootie! And those are some dope hairstyles. I’m in love with the first one!

  24. Dogvills

She is adorable. Any hairstyle suits her. These are all great ideas, I want to try a few of them.

  25. Rosey

This is a fun and useful post. My daughter has a knack for doing hair.

  26. Joanne T Ferguson

What great highlighted hair styles! Your little model is a cutie! I honestly never thought about how many ways someone’s hair could be done, including my own!

  27. Jaime Nicole

Wow that is a bunch of hairstyles! You have quite a beautiful and happy model to use too – very pretty and great styles.

  28. Adanna

I’m here for Nori pics and the hairstyles are just a bonus. My favorite is the two braids with puff at the top. Adorable! I’m not that great at braiding but I’m trying to teach myself because it makes school days pretty easy.

    • MimiCuteLips

Hahahaha, I know you are. I agree, braiding has been a huge time saver for me when it comes to her hair. I need a style that will last at least 5 days.

  29. Jeanine

She is so super adorable! Every style looks great on her. These are some wonderful looking hairstyles!

  30. Kasi

All of the hairstyles are super cute, and so is she! Perfect inspiration for natural kids!

  31. Erin

OH my goodness, these are some seriously adorable hairstyles! I’m forwarding this to my friend, she’s always looking for new hairstyles for her little girl!

  36. Siobhan (BeFree Project)

Your daughter is SUPER cute. My daughter suffered from cradle cap when she was a baby and was bald for a long time, I thought her hair would never grow back. Thankfully it did! I love all the cute styles you shared and I will be trying some of these on my little girl.

  37. Lynndee

She is so adorable! All the hairstyles look good on her. I’ve always wondered how they do those braids. Seems like hard to do for me. 🙂

  38. lisa

What a fantastic job you do on her hair! I love all the different style braids you can do and they are all so cute on her.

  39. Chrystal | YUM eating

She is adorable and I love all of her hairstyles. I had to learn how to do quite a few of these for my ex nieces moons ago and I did corn rows for my ex brother in laws.

  40. Uplifting Families

You shared a ton of cute hair styles. She looks like she has a ton of hair. She is an adorable little girl.

  41. Ann Bacciaglia

These are great hairstyles. I love that she is so patient and will let you do her hair. My daughter hated to sit still while i would do her hair.

  42. HilLesha

She is adorable! I have always like the “puff ball” hairstyle. These other hairstyles are cute, too!

  43. Nina Say

I am so obsessed with doing hair because I’m absolutely horrible at it, and I’m the mother of two girls. Poor things LOL. Accessories are a definite must-have.

  44. Camesha | Mama Motivator

I am keeping this post handy. I need to try these on my daughter. She had a TON of hair. I’m always looking for ideas.

  45. Stacie

  46. desirae young

Ohh my gosh she is adorable! You go mama for having the patience for creating all those hairstyles. I sometimes can’t even deal with my own!

  47. Kelly Hutchinson

  50. Kayvona

This is so cute!! I’m always looking for ways to do my daughters hair so this is definitely getting put to use?

  51. Cia |

I have 4 daughters. To say that I do not have the time it takes to cater to each scalp would be an understatement. The older they get the pickier they become. I love all of the styles you showed. Do you use different products on her hair now that she is older?

    • MimiCuteLips

Oh wow Cia, you really do have your worked cut out for you. I use the same products on her as mentioned in the other post. So long as it works I plan to stick with it.

  52. Krystal

I love all the bright bows and headbands. I actually need some new hair accessories! Thanks for the inspiration.

  53. Bobbie

How cute is she and all your baby styles are just too cute. Thanks for sharing. I can share these styles with my nieces for their babies hair #blmgirl

  54. Melanie

OMG I die from the cute. SO many sweet hairstyles. I just love doing my girl’s hair. I never had much hair to work with as a child so I enjoy doing my girls!

  55. Lauren

Lovely styles for kids! I like the puffball one the best. With a hair band, it looks super cute!

  56. Elaine Fishburne

    Beautiful Hair Styles…..

  57. Aisha Kristine Chong

Those are wonderful.. though, aren’t they hard to do? Well some of them.. hehehe.. they are all cute though!

  58. Neha Sultan

Wow these hair styles are so cute!! SO many different styles too will keep the kids interested with the changes.

  59. Lavonda

Thank you so much for sharing. I have a 7 year old daughter whose hair I’m trying to grow. I am going to try this and can’t wait to see the results. Right now she only wears braids because I don’t know how to comb hair but this styles seem pretty easy to do so I should be good. I do have a question though. How often do you clip her ends. I have only did my daughters twice in 7 years so I’m wondering if that’s why it’s not growing as fast.

    • MimiCuteLips

Lavonda, I hope these help you out. My daughter is three and thus far I’ve only clipped her ends once. If her ends appear to be unhealthy then you should give them a trim. Maybe evaluate them every couple of months. Typically natural hair doesn’t need to be clipped as often as permed hair. Hope this helps.

What type of products do you use on your little cuties twist out to preserve the curl? Love all your styles by the way. I’m interested in trying some of the natural poof/fro/ twist out looks since I always do braids with beads (give my girls some other options). Thanks!!!

    • MimiCuteLips

      Thanks, Ava.

I use Shea Moisture Curl and Style Milk and Mielle Tiny Tots Curl Enhancing Cream on her hair as I twist it up. I don’t add any additional product for the twist out. She wears a bonnet at night and finger fluff the next day.

You could use a little oil or water mist in a spray bottle to give it new life.
