Beyond the Lights Recap – No Spoilers
Last night I attended the Beyond the Lights premiere in Washington, DC. It was funny, it was mushy, it was loving, it was sweet and believe it or not it was raw. I also talked back to the screen, don’t judge me so did everyone else in the theater.
MimiCuteLips was ready okay!
Actor Nate Parker and Writer/Producer Gina Prince-Bythewood
The only thing I knew about Noni (the main character) Gugu Mbatha-Raw was that she was in Belle; a movie I’ve not seen. Thanks to social media I learned basketball player Amar’e Stoudemire produced the movie and Gina Prince-Bythewood who also wrote Love and Basketball was the writer. I remembered Kaz (her love interest) Nate Parker from the Great Debaters. Kudos to everyone for being movers and shakers in Hollywood. I’m all about wearing different hats in life.
The movie is a love story, but it’s also about being true to yourself. I didn’t see that coming in the previews. While watching this movie it caused me to do some reflecting. I had to snap out of it and focus but they deal with some real issues. Often times we are who others want us to be and not who we are meant to be. I recently talked about my feelings and dealings with turning 35 here. That post was so on time for this movie. I’m a sucker for love, I too dream of the knight and shinning armor fairy tale kind of love and there is an element of that in this movie but what I really love is they keep it real. While we dream of this fairy tale that simply isn’t reality but that doesn’t mean we can’t find good love.
Officer Kaz and Noni
This movie is great for date night, the passion is something else. You might feel like pulling your boo-thang a little closer. I’m just saying! It is also a great movie for Girl’s Night. See the movie; get some grub while discussing the movie. Then go home and cuddle, you’ve been warned. Nate Parker isn’t my type but he was really delicious in this movie. Cheers for black love.
To get more movies like Beyond the Lights you have to support this movie THIS WEEKEND! Once you’ve seen it come back and share your thoughts with me.
