Did you know Indie Fashion Week was a Thing?
Hey Cuties,
I participated in Indie Fashion Week in DC for the first time. Although this was my first time they have been around for several years. How did I miss this? No idea, but I won’t miss it again that’s for sure. Indie Fashion Week DC ran from February 27th to March 5th.
I attended “The FASHIONABLE State of the Union” hosted by Indie Fashion Week & Modern Stitches Magazine. It was an incredible town hall discussion with panelist that do a variety of things within the fashion industry and audience members. They discussed the current state of the fashion industry in the DMV area and more. I couldn’t accurately sum this up with words so I had to create a video so you could hear it for yourself.
Q: Do celebrities with clothing lines overshadow fashion designers that went to school for fashion? 00:11
Q: What is the fashion culture in the DMV area, and do you think it has a future here? 02:42

Q: What are some great networking tips? 14:07
Q: How can we better connect and collaborate in the fashion industry in the DMV? 19:51
Indie Fashion Week is a semi-annual series of events designed to highlight and showcase exclusive and or original products from independent, emerging and sustainable fashion collectives and houses. Its primary mission is to bridge the gap between consumers and independent brands through creative means of awareness, style consciousness and brand expansion potential within the Greater Washington, DC area – across all markets. The majority of the fashion you see on the runway is all handmade or hand designed. The clothing brands still use things like a shirt or hat heat press machine to print designs onto their clothing. These shows really help promote these brands to help increase their sales.
All of these persons exist within the fashion spectrum one way or another. The nice thing is they all do something different. That means their perspectives differ from one another. They didn’t always agree but they all brought really good information to the table. We talked fashion, but we also talked about networking, how to do it and how and when you should follow up.
Jason Anthony, the Commissioner of the Commissioner of Fashion Art and Events for Washington, DC. he has been in the fashion industry for many years. He started at the bottom and worked his way up. Now he is exploring other avenues.
Midori Amae, Miss Black VA 2017 is a gal of many talents and titles. She models, she does graphic design and she proudly represents my home state of VA. (Two Up Two Down)
Jennifer Jean-Pierre, Comme Coco is a DC lifestyle and photography blogger with love and adoration for all things fashion.
Ashleigh Demi, is a Producer and Media Personality for WPGC 95.5 in the Washington, DC area.
Cierra Lynn, is an artist. She promotes individuality through art. She makes LYNNmonade from lemons. She painted her blazer and my shirt is one of her designs as well. She designs all kind of pieces; my favorite are her glasses. I’ve got to get a pair of them.
The great thing about this event is they wanted to hear from you. They took questions from the audience members. This young lady took full advantage of the people in the room. Kudos to her.
Harley Morgan, Roe the Agency and founder of Indie Fashion Week. He has been in the fashion industry for many years. Funny thing is I’ve seen him around at several events but I didn’t know anything about him. Ashley Scarboro, Modern Stitches Magazine, Founder/Publisher was the moderator of the panelist.
After the panelist session up and coming fashion designer, Orlando @KingODaArtist did a fashion presentation for us. Following that it was time to network, to reach out and connect with some of the amazing people in the room. Everyone starts out unknown, how you finish is what matters.

Right, you get a bit more insight on what it takes to get clothing designs out there.
I had no clue that there was an Indie Fashion week. It is something that I just don’t keep up with. Fashion has never been my strong suit.

Extremely informative.
First, I want that T-shirt! Second, Indie fashion week sounds like a blast to attend. Finally, most events for fashion week don’t have an event where fellow or budding artists can glean information, so I think that is the best part of this article.
Thanks Cynthia. I agree, this is the perfect platform to help those just starting out.
I had no idea that was a thing! I love all their outfits and their hair and makeup are gorgeous!

Right Holly, I can’t wait to see where they end up in a few years.
This is cool. I like that there are multiple Fashion weeks now.
Me too Arlett, now you don’t have to try and be in every city.
That is awesome! This is the first time that I’ve heard of Indie Fashion Week, but I bet it was a fun, not to mention, a fabulous event. I would love to attend events like that. Soon, I hope. 🙂
I look forward to seeing them get bigger and better.
I’ve never had the pleasure of attending a fashion week, let alone an Indie Fashion week! Must have been a lot of fun!
It certainly was a lot of fun.
That’s cool. It’s a nice way to showcase brands that wouldn’t normally get national exposure.
It is LaShon, it is hard to get a start in fashion.
