Six Flags SUPERMAN Ride of Steel Virtual Reality Coaster Recap

Hey Cuties,

Friday is here and let me tell you, I’ve got the laughter you’re in need of. Gut busting laughter even. A couple days ago I attended my first media event with Six Flags. They were debuting their new SUPERMAN Ride of Steel Virtual Reality Coaster. Don’t be misled by the name this is an actual roller coaster you ride, so it is reality + virtual reality. This is not a simulator what so ever. Full Disclosure: I’ve not been on a roller coaster in 15 years, FIFTEEN YEARS!

Six Flags rolled out the red carpet for us, before we even entered the park. This newspaper though.

Okay, so what is Virtual Reality? Do you remember those old school view finders? They were red and you had a round card that looked similar to a film negative. But when you put the round card in you would see the images bold and vibrant in the view finder. So that old school view finder + modern technology = Virtual Reality. They have taken this same concept and made it digital. There’s no more round cards, you are viewing a 360 virtual experience; you feel just like you are there. I got Babe a VR set at Christmas and they are so much fun. He’s even been thinking about using it for more serious things like VR training for work, I don’t know much about how that’ll work but I’m sure it’ll be a lot more interesting than sitting in a chair and watching a video. And this Superman VR experience sure isn’t those either!

Squad up! Moms ‘N Charge, Jamari’s Jewels & The Style Medic

You know I had to roll with my squad, this might prove to be a bad move. You know bloggers capture everything… We chatted with the Six Flags staff and learned a lot about the park and the Superman Virtual Coaster. Ignorance might have been bliss. Two out of four are regular coaster riders; the other two out of four just want to live to tell the story. I will let you figure out who is whom. We enjoyed some good grub and dope cocktails, see the short video clip below to see what I mean.

It is SHOW TIME! I prayed to everyone and headed to the ride.

This is how Six Flags explains the Virtual Reality Coaster
A Virtual Reality Coaster is a traditional coaster that is equipped with cutting-edge technology to allow you to wear a wireless VR headset during the ride. You will feel heart-pumping adrenaline of steep drops, inverted loops and powerful twists and turns as gyros, accelerator and proximity sensors synchronize all of the action while viewing a remarkably realistic 360-degree virtual world. Did you get all of that? Virtual reality has become a massive part of developing technology, with so many wanting to get their hands on their very own virtual reality experience by using Oculus headsets from the comfort of their own home, it is no wonder that tech giants are trying to build upon that and websites like Tech Review Advisor are giving detailed accounts and comparisons of this newness.

Virtual Reality headsets

If you want the virtual experience the staff will put the headset on for you. If not you just get on the ride, obviously we were here for the experience. The headset is strapped to your head and they adjust accordingly. In total it has three straps, one around the head, over the head a chinstrap. NOT CUTE!

They get them halfway on and then another staff person finishes the process once you are seated. For now, the viewer just rest on your head.

It is very well padded for comfort.

The first thing I asked when I arrived was “Are these things clean?” you know because I believe in style and grace. They assured me that they are clean and they use a sanitizing cloth to wipe them down after each wear. Note: According to manufacturer’s guidelines children must be at least 12 years of age to get the virtual experience.

The headsets calibrate according to your seat. It knows if you are in the third car or the first car, it also knows if you are on the right side or the left side and adjust your viewing experience accordingly.

How do the headsets show you a virtual world?
Six Flags has partnered with Samsung Gear VR and Oculus, global leaders in technology, to deliver this world-class experience. The Samsung Gear VR headsets provide high-resolution imagery with an extra-wide point of view to seamlessly merge reality with the virtual world.

On the new Virtual Reality Roller Coaster experience, you’ll be immersed in the comic-book world of Metropolis. You’ll strap in for a sky tour of the city and soon encounter LEX LUTHOR after you take off from the station. This villain and his army of Lexbots use an anti-gravity gun to create chaos through the city. SUPERMAN comes along to destroy the anti-gravity gun, causing all the floating objects to suddenly fall – just as you’re falling down the first giant drop on the coaster. As you twist, turn and dive along the coaster’s track, you’ll be soaring alongside SUPERMAN as he battles the Lexbots.

Yeah so…

I just needed to ground myself, I need all movement and motion to come to a complete halt. The only way I know how to do that is to sit down, so I did.
