Last week was a really busy one for me, but one of the most epic of them all took place on Wednesday. Comcast invited me to Studio Xfinity for a luncheon with a few dope Olympians. I was super excited about that, and they told us all about the Internet Essentials, which I knew nothing about. As a long time customer, I know all about their products and services. What I did not know about was how active they are in the community.
INTERNET ESSENTIALS: Internet Essentials is Comcast answer to help close the Digital Divide; it is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption initiative for low-income families. Many others will look here for options for making hotspots in their homes. However, Comcast believes that everyone should have access to the opportunities made possible by having the internet at home. Internet Essentials from Comcast is a comprehensive high-speed Internet adoption program for low-income Americans. It provides low-cost, high-speed Internet service for $9.95 a month plus tax; the option to purchase an Internet-ready computer for under $150; and multiple options to access free digital literacy training in print, online, and in person. NO CONTRACT. NO CREDIT CHECK. NO INSTALLATION FEE. IN-HOME WiFi INCLUDED.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE: 1. Households must have a least one child who is eligible for the National School Lunch Program, receive HUD housing assistance or are a low-income veteran receiving state and/or federal assistance. 2. OUR GUEST: Comcast partners, and U.S. Olympic Gold Medalists twin sisters Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando + Six-time U.S.Olympic Medal Winner Jackie Joyner-Kersee. They gathered for a special panel discussion and Q&A session on the digital divide and the importance of internet access as it pertains to learning. These ladies are more than their athletic abilities which was incredible in their own right. However, these ladies are also moving and shaking in the community on a gold medal level.
Jackie has the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation and they have a large community center in her hometown of East St. Louis. Comcast came in and upgraded all of their equipment so the kids have nothing bust the best.
We are here to change the lives of at-risk children in East St. Louis, and in communities across the US. Children in low-income areas often lack the guidance, safe play places, help with school work, and quality adult leadership they need to succeed in life. We want kids to dare to have dreams, and then gain the confidence and drive to achieve them. No matter where kids come from, they can grow up to be productive adults or even leaders.
We were a captive audience, you know that press life. SN: My outfit was perfect that day. P-E-R-F-E-C-T!
I am a long time Xfinity user as I mentioned, but honestly, I had no idea that Comcast was so active and engaged in the community. I did not know them beyond the cable/internet/phone business, though I had heard about the ip phone systems that make use of their platforms. I was floored to hear how they were literally changing lives in the community on such a grand scale. You know I believe in using my platform to go beyond myself. Comcast is doing exactly that.
Honestly, it is amazing how much something as simple as an internet connection can change a life. Just think about all the fantastic online businesses out there for example! Without an internet connection, the opportunities available to these businesses would be severely limited. However, thanks to satellite internet packages and bundles similar to hughesnet business, getting online has never been easier. Moreover, thanks to the widespread availability of satellite internet connections, even individuals and businesses living in remote areas can gain access to a fast and reliable internet connection. Of course, internet connections are likely to drop every now and then, so it’s important to keep an eye on the strength of the connection. Recently, some homeowners have been getting receivers in their homes to help them speed up their internet. They seem to be working pretty well, people can learn more about that device here if they’d like to. If that doesn’t start speeding up the internet, homeowners may want to compare broadband deals from other suppliers to make sure they get the best connection possible.
PROGRESS: Since 2011, Internet Essentials has connected me than 1.5 million families, or about 6 million low-income Americans, to the power of the internet at home, including me than 35,000 families, or about 140,000 low-income residents, in the Greater Washington, D.C. Area. Comcast just announced it will significantly expand eligibility to low-income veterans.
Comcast will launch a senior citizen pilot program in Washington, D.C. starting in 2019 for eligible seniors to connect with loved ones near and far and give easy access to news, information, and entertainment.
Jackie Joyner-Kersee, winner of six Olympic Medals, is considered by ESPN to be one of the 50 Great Athletes of All Time and was voted Female Athlete of the 20th Century by Sports Illustrated for Women. She is the first woman to win back-to-back gold medals in the heptathlon, the first African American woman to win an Olympic Medal in the long jump, and the first woman to score 7,000 points in the heptathlon.
The Lamoureux Twins are female ice hockey players for Team USA. They won GOLD in the 2018 Olympics, Silver in 2014 and 2010, and they are 6X World Champions.
Monique & Jocelyne are constantly advocating for what they know is right. They are role models for young girls and a symbol of determination for men and women.
SN: Both Monique and Jocelyne are expecting their first child. Monique is due in December, and Jocelyne is due in January. Congrats to both the ladies.
We enjoyed chatting all things Internet Essentials with these awesome ladies. It was nice to see a lot of familiar faces, I hadn’t seen them in a minute. We enjoyed the chatter, got all caught up and laughed at ourselves. Time well spent.
But before I go, the pièce de ré·sis·tance. There was no way I was leaving the building without getting a picture with Jackie Joyner-Kersee, because it is criminal to not refer to her by her whole entire name.
Chat with me in the comments below or FB, IG, and Twitter.

Thanks! It was so freaking cool meeting her. I heard about her athletics as a kid, so meeting her as an adult was full circle.

This is truly incredible. Most folks ASSUME everyone has high speed broadband at home. This will change lives for the better
Right! People assume, but if you look at the numbers you would be shocked. With everything going tech the internet is a must-have.
I love that Comcast is working to help lower income families gain access to the internet. Everyone should have access to the internet.
They should, and this is a great way to bridge the gap.

This seems like an amazing and important to event. And… your outfit was perfect!!
It really was, thanks.
Internet access is so important for school aged kids. So much of their work is done online. Textbooks are online too so without internet access kids will struggle to get their education. This is a great program
Yes! This allows them to stay current with the educational work and tech trends. Everything is online now.
That’s so awesome that you were invited to that luncheon! You got some great pictures. The Internet Essentials pack is a great option for low income families. Kudos to Comcast for that.
Thank, it was very up close and personal type of event.
This is a dope event that Comcast held. I wish it were in my area and I am jealous you got to meet Jackie Joyner Kersee.
Girl, it was an epic moment meeting Jackie for sure.
